A salt-hungry rat displays highly motivated, stereotyped ingestive
behavior when given access to a highly concentrated saline solution
(3% NaCl, roughly the concentration of seawater). Eight days prior,
this animal was switched to a low-sodium chow (0.01% Na) with no
access to saline. Infrared (night-vision) recording was used to
observe this nocturnal species while fully awake and alert, allowing a
more consistent behavioral response. Elapsed time after return of
