Overall Digestion
Bolus- soft, pliable ball created from
chewing and addition of saliva.
The Process:
•In
the mouth the saliva softens
food so it can be swallowed.
•Ptyalin in saliva converts starches
into simple sugar
•Then it moves down the
esophagus into the stomach by
peristalsis
Process:
In
the stomach gastric juices are
released and the stomach wall
churns and mixes (chyme)
Then small amounts move into
the small intestine and digestion
is completed and absorption
occurs
Process:
Additional
enzymes are added
from the pancreas and bile from
the liver/gallbladder
Then it moves to the large
intestine and large amounts of
water is absorbed
Then the rest of the undigested
semi solid material (feces) is
moved to the colon
Process:
Defecation
occurs when a reflex is
triggered.
Entire process can take 75-80 hours
Flatulence- gas formation, 1-3 pints/
day passes through rectum, 14 times
a day, bacteria produces the gas
