Primary Succession
•
Changes that happen in an
area when no soil or
organisms exist.
•
First species to populate
area- pioneer species they
are carried by the wind or
water
•
Plant seeds land in the new
soil and then they start
growing plants
•
It take centuries for the land
to reach the completely fertile
area
•
Steps of it
1.
There is no soil
2.
The first things to
grow are mosses and
lichens
3.
Soil forms and some
plants grow
4.
As plants die they
make the plants grow
and more plants
mature in the fertile
soil
Secondary Succession
•Plants grow in an area that
currently don’t have planted
plants in them
•The end product is a rich,
fertile forest
•Changes that happen in an
area where the ecosystem
has been disturbed but
where soil and organisms
still live
•Steps of it
1.Grasses and
wildflowers take over
an abandoned field
2. After a few years,
pine seedlings and
other plants replace
some grasses and
wildflowers
3, As tree growth
continues, the trees
begin to crowd out
the grasses and
wildflowers
4. Eventually, a mixed
forest grows
