Digestion
By: Mr. Hunter
Eeeewww!
 How long are your intestines? At least 25 feet
in an adult. Be glad you're not a full-grown
horse -- their coiled-up intestines are 89 feet
long!
 Chewing food takes from 5-30 seconds
 Swallowing takes about 10 seconds
 Food sloshing in the stomach can
last 3-4 hours.
 It takes 3 hours for food to move
through the intestine
 Food drying up and hanging out in
the large intestine can last 18 hours
to 2 days!
Americans eat about 700
million pounds of peanut
butter.
Americans eat over 2
billion pounds of
chocolate a year.
In your lifetime, your
digestive system may
handle about 50 tons!!
Where does digestion begin?
Digestion begins in the
_____.
What does your mouth do?
 Your mouth produces saliva.
 Enough saliva is produced in one day to fill a
12-oz soda bottle.
What next, mouth?
 The food is balled up into a bolus and is
pushed towards the back of your throat.
 The bolus then travels down your esophagus.
Esophagus
Esophagus
stretchy pipe
10 inches long
Epiglottis
2-3 seconds spent in the
esophagus
Food then moves to the stomach.
What are your stomach’s jobs?
to store the food you've
eaten
to break down the food into
a liquidy mixture
to slowly empty that liquidy
mixture into the small
intestine
Stomach
 Your stomach is a mixer and a
churner.
 It contains gastric juices, acids
that help to break down food and
kill any bacteria accidentally
consumed.
Small Intestine
Chemicals released by the
pancreas, liver, and gallbladder
break down nutrients.
Broken down nutrients are
_____ by the small intestine.
Small Intestine
Liver
Largest internal organ of the
body
Filters blood
Stores unneeded nutrients
for later use
Produces bile (breaks down
fats)
Liver
Gallbladder
 Stores bile
Pancreas
Breaks down proteins, fats, and
starch
Extremely important chemicals
for digesting and absorbing
food substances
Large Intestine
Water and some other
nutrients are absorbed from
the digested material
Solid material is compacted
and stored here.
Anus
Solid material leaves
here
Internal and external
anal sphincter muscle
Food Flight
Imagine you are food traveling
through the digestive system.
You are going to make postcards
to describe your trip.
Using your notes, you are going to
write about your trip and include
some major stops along the
digestive tract.
Digestive System Postcards
 Choose a food. On one
side of the postcard,
include a picture of
something that the food
might see or pass
through.
 On the other side,
include a description of
your experience at this
point of the digestive
system.
Food Flight Rubric
 All stops included _____ 10 pts.
(mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine,
large intestine, liver)
 Creativity _____ 10 pts.
 Accuracy of drawings _____ 20 pts.
 Accuracy of description _____ 30 pts.
 Time management _____ 20 pts.
 Name on Project _____ 10 pts.
