Ecosystem
 Highly organized structure
 Many interactions
 Some obvious and some subtle
 Delicate balance
 Can be studied at many levels

Ecosystem
Species
 Group of organisms that can produce
fertile offspring
 Often have similar needs
 Leads to competition for resources
 Where they live is their habitat
 Area is the geographic range
 Loss of the above can have a negative
affect on species
Populations and
Communities
 Population is all of the members of a species in
a given area.
 Pheasant population in Faribault Co.
 White-Tail deer population in MN
 Squirrel population in my backyard
 Community- All of the species that live and
interact in a given area
 Forest community
 Wetland community
Ecosystems
 Ecosystem- All of the communitites along
with the environment (abiotic)
 Includes water, soil, rocks, weather, etc
 Biodiversity can indicate health of
ecosystem
Echoes of Cry of the
Marsh
 Video that refers back to an older video
shot in MN
 History of habitat destruction and results
 Not just the rainforests!
