Newton’s Laws of
motion
Force
-Force is anything that changes the state
of rest or motion of an object.
-What are the forces that
affect the coaster’s
motion?
Describe at least three of
them. Write your answer
in the space provided.
Balanced forces
-When the forces applied to an object produces a net force
of zero the forces cancel each other out
-No motion occurs when forces are balanced
-Explain two other
examples of balanced
forces that you see in
the room.
Unbalanced forces
When the forces applied to an object produces a net
force greater than zero the forces are unbalanced
Unbalanced forces acting on an object do not cancel
each other out. The object will accelerate in the
direction of the strongest force.
Motion occurs when forces are unbalanced

Friction
Force that opposes motion (Example: air resistance)
Terminal Velocity – When an object in motion reaches its
maximum velocity
-Occurs when falling objects stop accelerating because the
air resistance balances the object’s weight.
How does a parachute work?
Newton’s first law of motion
Inertia – Objects at rest, tend to stay at rest and
objects in motion tend to stay in motion until an
outside force is applied to the object
Why doesn’t this rock move?

Explain what is happening to the objects in each
of these animations
Newton’s Second law of motion
Force = mass x aceleration
F=ma
Force and Mass – An object’s motion will depend
on the force applied and mass of object
The greater the mass of an object the greater the
force required to accelerate it or move it
Which requires more force to move?
Which will move faster?
Momentum
The product of an objects mass multiplied by its
velocity
Non moving objects have zero momentum
The greater the mass of an object and the faster it is
moving the greater its momentum will be
Newton’s third law of motion
For every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction (Action/Reaction)

Can you answer this riddle?
If you were standing in the center of a frictionless
surface what could you do to cause yourself to
slide to the edge?
Can You define inertia?
