What do doorbells, microwaves, and speakers all have in
common? They all use Electricity and Magnetism. You
experience Electricity and Magnetism in many areas of life,
even if you don’t see it. Electricity and Magnetism are
found in many fields: entertainment, construction, and
medical.
It is important to understand the basics of electricity and
magnetism in order to apply the concepts to real-world
experiences. Review the following resources to strengthen
your background knowledge on the basics of electricity
and magnetism.

Electricity and Magnetism are used extensively in the medical
field. Medical Imaging is commonly used in the diagnoses of
patients. Electricity and Magnetism are also commonly
present in medical devises used to treat patients. View the

Use the digital resources provided on the previous page in order
to research. Gather your research on the graphic organizer.
Focus your thoughts and information on the following
questions:
How does the medical device use electricity or magnetism?
How does the medical device help to prevent or treat a patient?
What side-effects or concerns are associated with the medical
device in connection to electricity or magnetism?
Using the information gathered, create comments on a teachercreated VoiceThread explaining:
How the medical device uses electricity or magnetism
How the medical device helps to prevent or treat a patient
Any side-effects or concerns that are associated with the
medical device

BCPS Curriculum
4 Students will analyze data obtained from observations of real-life events and make
predictions about the impact of electricity on the human body.
Maryland State Curriculum
1.5 The student will use appropriate methods for communicating in writing and orally
the processes and results of scientific investigation.
Common Core State Standards
Reading: 1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical
inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support
conclusions drawn from the text.
Writing: 7. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused
questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
Standards for the 21st Century Learner
1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g. textual,
visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning.
2.1.3 Use strategies to draw conclusions from information and apply knowledge to
curricular areas, real-world situations, and further investigations.
ISTE NETS S
1 Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology.

•
Collaborate with your school’s Library Media Specialist to
implement this Slam Dunk Lesson.
•
Direct students to SAVE and then OPEN this PowerPoint file and
view in Slide Show mode for interactivity.
•
Direct students to save or print the Research Organizer after
completing.
•
You will need to create the VoiceThread and create student
accounts in order to access and use VoiceThread. Please see your
