The Digestive System
…eww…
Functions
Break down food into energy & nutrients
Send nutrients to bloodstream
Get rid of food waste
Components
Mouth
Saliva
Esophagus (moves food
from mouth to stomach via
a muscular action
Stomach (breaks down
food via natural acids)
Liver (filters your blood,
pulls out bad particles, and
produces bile)
Pancreas (makes
insulin)
Gall Bladder (stores
bile)
Small Intestine (fingerlike walls absorb
nutrients)
Large Intestine (water
is pulled out and
turned into poop)
Process
1. Mouth, teeth and saliva all begin
to break down food
2. Food is moved down esophagus
with peristalis
3. Stomach churns and breaks up
food with acids; some nutrients are
absorbed from the stomach wall
4. Small intestine breaks down food
further, and nutrients are absorbed
by villi, which are fingerlike
extentions that pull nutrients into
bloodstream
5. Food waste travels to large
intestine where water is extracted,
feces is formed and then exits the
body
