WWF REDD+ PILOT PROJECT
Enhancing Tanzanian Capacity to Deliver Short and Long
Term Data on Forest Carbon Stock Across the Country
Kusaga Mukama
February, 2014
Introduction
•
WWF REDD+ Pilot Project is among 9 Pilot projects in the
country supported by Royal Norwegian government.
•
•
•
The project started in January, 2011
•
The project resumed in April, 2013 .
However, it was suspended early 2012 due to fund
mismanagement.
Project goal and Purpose
•
•
Goal: The national Monitoring, Reporting and Verification
MRV system is established to reduced GHG emission from
deforestation and degradation of Tanzanian forest.
Purpose: To contribute core data to Tanzanian National
Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system.

• A range of future scenarios for change in carbon stock
produced.

Achievement
• Distribution of carbon plots across Tanzania.
Current plan
• The main focus of the project work plan for 2014 is to
ensure full implementation of project activities and
deliver quality outputs
• Developing land use/cover change scenarios is one of
the activities under the current plan.
• Therefore Regional scenarios workshops are
organised in six zones of Tanzania.
• The main objective of scenarios workshop is to collect
information/data for mapping possible future land
use/cover change for 2025 across Tanzania.
Current plan
• Workshop participants are invited from different actors
including Central and local government, NGO,
Government Agency, Research Institutions, Investors,
Private sector and CBO
•
Statistics of Southern Zone
• Southern Zone has three regions including Ruvuma,
Lindi and Mtwara.
• Major economic activities in this zone are:
• Agriculture
• Livestock keeping
• Lumbering
• Fishing
• Beekeeping
• Mining
• Trade and Tourist hunting
