UWE’s first WP strategic assessment - outcomes
The University’s WP strategic assessment has enabled us to:
• re-affirm the importance of WP – values, vision and mission!
• evidence how our commitment to WP is manifest within the
institution and how this contributes to the development of a
diverse student body
• bring all our activity together in a single strategic document
• set out our detailed objectives and planned achievements for the
period 2009/10 to 2011/12.
• outline the level of resource we have committed to WP
• Celebrate our achievements!
2.
Place of WP in UWE’s updated Vision and
Mission
• WP at the core of our updated Vision and Mission
• Major commitment to raise aspirations and widen access
to HE for people from under-represented backgrounds,
families, groups and communities
• Issue of social justice
• Succeeding at it contributes to social inclusion
3.
Who is under-represented in HE?
• People from lower socio-economic groups
• People who live in areas of relative deprivation where
participation in HE is low
• People from certain minority ethnic groups or sub groups
• People with a disability
• People from cared-for backgrounds
4.
Widening Participation Strategy
• Pre-entry – aspiration and awareness raising as well as
improving attainment
• Access and admissions – application support and
enhanced admissions procedures
• Retention and success – HE preparation and
transition; induction and social integration; learning,
teaching and curriculum development; student support
• Enhancing employability – equipping students with the
experience and skills to progress to employment or
further learning on completion of HE studies
5.
UWE’s WP outreach programme
• UWE engages with learners in schools and colleges on a
large scale and through a number of different routes
• Comprehensive programme of activities to support young
people aged 9-19, mature learners, young people in care and
prospective students with disabilities
• Many initiatives developed and delivered in partnership with
Aimhigher West, WVLLN and OCN SWR
• One of our biggest assets in delivering our WP outreach
programme is our student body!
6.
Student support - bursaries
• UWE bursary - £1,000 pa for UK students with residual
household incomes of up to £25,000 pa
• In 2008/09 University expenditure on bursaries
amounted to £6.2 million – approximately 5300
recipients (36% of all students)
• In 2nd year of the new student finance system (2007/08),
UWE achieved fourth highest level of expenditure on
bursaries and outreach activity amongst 123 HE
