Physical Regions of Canada
The Atlantic Region
The Atlantic Region
The area is located in all of the 4 maritime provinces
(New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island,
and Newfoundland and Labrador) as well as, the
majority of the area known as the Gaspé Peninsula in
Quebec.

Trees are also
important for tourism.

Shipping
Erosion and Glaciers
carved the mountains
and left lots of lakes and
waterways.
Shipping
Waterways and
Protected
harbours make
shipping a big
industry.
Mining
Iron
The rocks in the area
provide many minerals
which can be mined.
Zinc
Gold
Mining
Fishing
Starting with John
Cabot in 1497, there
has been fishing off the
Grand Banks.
Unfortunately the area
has been over-fished
and there are now
many endangered
species.

The Cordillera
10
The Cordillera
The Cordillera is located on the west
coast of Canada and includes British
Columbia, the Yukon, southwest
Alberta and part of North West
Territories.
Cordillera is a Spanish word
for 2 parallel sets of mountains

Fisheries
Salmon and other fish
are caught and canned
or frozen for sale.
Safe harbours
and proximity to
the ocean make
fishing a big
industry.

Tomatoes
The greenhouses in
the Fraser Valley
produce over 9000
tonnes of tomatoes a
year.
Sweet Peppers

Cucumbers
Lettuce
16
Climate
The climate in the Cordillera is very
dependent on region. The interior is
colder and dryer with more snow and
the coast is mild, wet and rainy with
snow that rarely stays.
17
The North
The Northern region is located in the
Yukon, Northwest Territories,
Nunavut, Northern Quebec and the
most extreme tip of Labrador and
Newfoundland.

Many trees are being destroyed
by the Mountain Pine Beetle.

Oil and Gas
There are many off shore drilling rigs coming
to the North which is bringing more people
to the area.

21
Mining
Zinc, lead, diamonds and
gold are mined in the north.
22
Climate
The Climate in the North is very cold in
the winter months. Because of the tilt
of the earth, this region has 6 months of
constant darkness in the winter and 6
months of constant light in the summer.
Permanent frost (permafrost) is present in
this region. (the ground never thaws)

23
The Plains
24
The Plains
The Plains region is in between the
Cordillera and the Great Canadian
Shield. It is found in the Yukon,
Northwest Territories, British
Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan
and Manitoba.
25
Population
Population is greater in the southern
parts of the area, and usually near
rivers or lakes because the climate is
very dry. Waterways also act as
areas of recreation, and support
tourism.

The Plains Transportation
Agriculture
27
Major Industries
•
Agriculture - wheat, wheat, barley, oats, flax,
canola, mustard, potatoes, corn and sugar beets
•
Mining - mostly fuel products like oil, natural gas,
coal, potash but also copper, zinc, gold and uranium
•
Transportation - Since the plains are flat, and
supply much of the crops for the country, they are
also a major transportation hub with trains being the
most common method of transport.
28
Climate
The plains climate is generally dry, so the
population tends to be concentrated
around waterways.
• Cold winters
• Hot summers
29
The Shield
The Canadian Shield is the largest of Canada's 6
physical regions. This area completely surrounds the
Hudson's Bay in the shape of a horseshoe. It includes
the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Quebec, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Labrador. It is
mostly rock that was once mountains millions of years
ago.
30
Resources
The Shield is a very isolated area. The
population is very low. Some resources
that come from the Shield are:
Furs - hunting and trapping
Minerals - remember those rocks?
Hydro Electricity - lots of waterways
around the gulf
Wood - trees with shallow roots like spruce
and fir
31
Climate
Like the North the climate in much of the
shield is very cold in the winter months.
The summer months support tourism for
those who want to fish, hike, hunt,
swim, water-ski, canoe or do other
outdoor activities.
32
The Great Lakes-St.
Lawrence
•
This is the smallest region and the
furthest south.
33
Climate
Hot, humid summers due to the
surrounding lakes and waterways.
Very cold wet winters with up to 80cm of
snow and temperatures of -30 celsius.
34
Industries
Manufacturing - Over 50% of jobs in this region
are from manufacturing. Steel, iron-ore, coal and
lime stone are some of the products that are
manufactured in this area.
35
Industries
Farming - This is one of the most
important regions for growing crops in
Canada. It is the warmest in summer
and has rich fertile soil.
Apples, peaches, cherries, asparagus,
tomatoes and also strawberries, peaches,
cherries and grapes are grown in the
Niagra Falls Area. Southwest Ontario
grows soybeans, corn and tobacco.
