What are the power resources in China?
In fact, many power resources are used in
China.
Such as coal, petroleum, natural gas,
nuclear power (non-renewable).
And then hydro-electric power, wind energy,
solar energy (renewable).

Where are they?
Coal and petroleum are the most common power
resources in the world including China.
There are coal and petroleum in the northern,
northwestern, northeastern and the central parts of
China, but not the southern part.
And then about hydro-electric power, they
are mainly around the Chang Jiang and the
Huang He in the central and northern parts
of China.
Using wind energy and solar energy are not
common in China.

There are two nuclear power plants in China. One
is in Daya Bay and the other is in Qinshan. Since
southeastern part of China need to use more and
more electricity but the electricity in that part are
not enough, so Guangdong plans to build five
more nuclear power plants over the next 20 years
to generate more electricity.
Using nuclear power can produce a great amount of power to meet
the growing energy demand in the energy-deficient region along the
southeast coast.
It can also greatly reduce the amount of coal transported form the
Back north to the southeast coast of China and lessen the environmental
problems brought by the burning of coal and petroleum. But it may
raise the sea temperature around the ower plant and cause
radioactive pollution, nuclear accident something like that.

So, different people have different views about using this power.

In China, the power resources are unevenly distributed. The
main power resources (coal and petroleum) are mainly
around the northwest. They are far away from the centres of
consumption along the eastern coast. And also, most of the
power resources are found in the northern part of China.
Only a few are found in the areas south of Chang Jiang. So
there are limited energy resources in the eastern and
southeastern provinces. Recent economic development and
population growth in these provinces has created a great
demand for energy, hence the problems of energy shortage.
On the other hand, in the northwestern part of China, since
the economic development in these provinces is limited, there
is energy surplus for export.

Solutions
1.transferring energy form the energy surplus
regions to the energy deficit regions
2.developing new power resources in the
energy deficit area.

Coal and petroleum account for over 90% of energy consumption in
China.
So in burning fossil fuels (coal and petroleum), a large amount of
poisonous gases and pollutants is released into the atmosphere. This
brings us significant environmental problems including acid rain and
global warming. (air pollution)
And also, when the hot water is drained into the rivers (industries also
use water to cool down something), it may affect the plant and animal
life around the rivers. (thermal pollution)
Coal mining and oil drilling can change the natural landscapes. In
mining areas, many trees are cut down for power resources. Soil is then
loosened and easily removed by heavy rain and strong winds. This may
cause serious flooding in the lower river courses. (changes in natural
and human landscapes)

Solutions
As the problems are becoming so serious,
we should think some ways to reduced
them, such as developing renewable
power resources, using energy saving
machines, saving electricity.

Economic development in different area
In the coastal areas, economy developed so fast that there are not enough
energy to use. The coastal area include east and south of China. Since north and
west areas of China are in the first step of economic development, these area does
not use lot of energy. Therefore these areas are energy surplus region so that energy
can be transport to south and east.

Impact of using too much fossil fuels
Air pollution
Coal and petroleum account for over 90% of energy consumption in China.
In burning coal and petroleum, a large amount of poisonous gases and
pollutants is released into the atmosphere. In many cities in China, a high
concentration of carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide is recorded. This brings
us significant environment problems including acid rain and global warming.

Water pollution
When water is used for the power industry, it is heated. When the hot water
is drained into the rivers, it may affect the plant and animal life in and around
the rivers. This is known as thermal pollution.
Every year, a large amount of oil transported by super oil tankers across the
oceans. This can increase the danger of oil spills and leakage and may lead to
serious water pollution.

Plant and animal habitats are directly destroyed by mining and the construction
dams and reservoirs. Moreover, burning fossil fuels leads to a high concentration
of pollutants in the air and an acid rain problem. This can damage the natural
vegetation and at the same time cause lung cancer and respiratory illness to
human beings. Finally, power plants on the coast can cause thermal and water
pollution. This can damage marine life and living things in the rivers.
