The Powhatans fished and collected
shellfish in the ocean and rivers. The
boys and men hunted beavers,
raccoons, squirrels, bears, deer, and
turkeys in the forests. Deer hunters were
a means of survival that were important
to the Powhatans. The Powhatans were
good farmers. Their crops included corn,
beans, peas, melons, squashes, and
pumpkins. They used plants for food or
medicine.

The region between the Appalachian Mountains
and the Rocky Mountains is grassland. Eastern
part of the regions get more rain, and the grass
there is tall. These areas are called prairies. In
the west, where there is less rain, the grasses
grow shorter. These high plains are called the
Great Plains. The climate of the great plains was
harsh. Hot summers were broken by thunderous
lightening storms. During long, cold winters,
blizzards blew across the plains.

are hot and nights are cold. There are
dry periods, called droughts, and
sandstorms. When rains do come, small
streams can quickly flood nearby areas.

Farming was difficult in the desert climate, yet an
important means of survival. The pueblo people planted
their crops in low sloping cliffs and in valleys. They built
small dams and dug ditches to carry water to the crops.

colors of corn, including blue, red, yellow, and white. The
corn was used to make cornmeal, soups, stews, tortillas,
and bread.

The Pueblo people used natural resources to build
their homes. They used multi-story terraced
buildings made of adobe for shelter. Adobe is a
mixture of clay mixed with straw or grass. They
made bricks out of the adobe and dried them in the
sun to make them hard. Pueblo homes were mainly
used for sleeping and shelter. There was no furniture
and the families slept in one room on blankets.
