Test Review
Relative Location
• Definition: A location of a place in relation to
another place.
• Example: The relative location of Kansas City,
Missouri is just east of Kansas City, Kansas.
• It is a way of describing a place using reference
points like north, south, east, west, etc. or
landmarks. For example: Heritage Elementary is
"west of the railroad tracks.”
Absolute Location
• Definition: A point on the earth's surface
expressed by a coordinate system such as
latitude and longitude or street address.
• Example: Grand Canyon National Park is
located at 36° N, 112° W.

Cartograms

rather than
to its land
size.
Map Projection
• Definition: a means of projecting the Earth which
is a sphere (or part of it) on a flat map.
• All projections have some distortion—distance,
size, shape, or direction. Think of what happens
to an orange peel when you take it off the orange
and press it on a flat surface.
• A projection is a drawing of the Earth’s surface
that reduces some distortions that are cause by
converting three dimensions into two
dimensions.
