Digestive System
The Digestive System
 *Student Learning Target:
I can identify the general function and major organs of
the digestive system.
I can explain how the digestive system helps to
maintain the homeostasis of the organism.
 *Aim:
How does the digestive system help us to maintain
homeostasis?
What is it for?
 Why do we eat food/drink water?
 Energy!
 Nutrients!
Notes Today: (20 min)
 Define:
 Homeostasis – the process of regulation of an organism’s
internal environment in order to survive
 Salivary glands
 Amylase
 Peristalsis
 Pepsin
 Villi

environment in order to survive
Salivary glands – secrete saliva into the mouth to moisten food
Amylase – enzyme that breaks down starch
Peristalsis – series of involuntary smooth muscle contractions to
help move food
Pepsin – gastric juice secreted into the stomach to digest proteins
Villi – fingerlike lining of the small intestine that helps absorb food
and nutrients
Digestion and Homeostasis
 How does the digestive system help us maintain
HOMEOSTASIS?
 Gives us energy.
 Absorbs nutrients.
 Water/liquid absorption in the large intestines
 Excretion of waste (Excretory system also)
Tomorrow:
Homework due, as always
Quiz!
Binders due, to be TURNED IN!
