Digestive System
The Digestive System
*Student Learning Target:
I can identify the general function and major organs of
the digestive system.
I can explain how the digestive system helps to
maintain the homeostasis of the organism.
*Aim:
How does the digestive system help us to maintain
homeostasis?
What is it for?
Why do we eat food/drink water?
Energy!
Nutrients!
Notes Today: (20 min)
Define:
Homeostasis – the process of regulation of an organism’s
internal environment in order to survive
Salivary glands
Amylase
Peristalsis
Pepsin
Villi
Notes Today:
Define:
Homeostasis – the process of regulation of an organism’s internal
environment in order to survive
Salivary glands – secrete saliva into the mouth to moisten food
Amylase – enzyme that breaks down starch
Peristalsis – series of involuntary smooth muscle contractions to
help move food
Pepsin – gastric juice secreted into the stomach to digest proteins
Villi – fingerlike lining of the small intestine that helps absorb food
and nutrients
Digestion and Homeostasis
How does the digestive system help us maintain
HOMEOSTASIS?
Gives us energy.
Absorbs nutrients.
Water/liquid absorption in the large intestines
Excretion of waste (Excretory system also)
