What is a network?
A network is a group of computers that are
connected together in order to share resources
and information quickly and efficiently.
Client-server networks
A server is a
computer dedicated
to provide a certain
service and manage
resources.
Clients are the
workstations that are
connected to the
network.
Peer-to-peer networks
Computers share resources and share equal control over resources.
They are inexpensive, but they can handle only limited
amounts of information.
Found in home & small offices.
Types of Networks
Local Area Network
Wide Area Network
LAN
WAN

Ex. The Internet
A router is a gateway
device between networks
Network Technologies
Wired: Computers
can be connected
together using a
network cable. A
network cable is
used to transfer
data between
computers on a
network.
Wi-Fi: Wireless
fidelity or Wi-Fi
allows computers
and devices to
connect to a local
area network
wirelessly.
3G/4G: 3G and
4G are cellular
data networks
that are used by
smartphones and
mobile devices.
IP Addresses & Domain Names
When a computer is connected to a large
network, it is given an address made up of a
unique series of numbers.
Ex. 69.147.76.15
An IP address helps a computer on
a network find other computers
on the network.
Because an IP address is tricky to remember,
domain names are used to represent them.
