A computer network is a group of computers that can exchange information
and share resources e.g printers.
•The information to be shared is stored centrally in a high speed, high
capacity computer called SERVER.
•The other computers that access information from the server are
called Clients or workstation.
•The workstations or clients, are connected to the server, using one of the
many types of cables (UTP, Coaxial ,Fibre) or a radio link(wireless connection
or WIFI) to form a computer network.
•The media to be used will depend on bandwidth and distance between the
server and the workstations
•The other consideration in choosing a media is cost and noise interference.
Every computer in a network has a unique identification number called IP
(Internet protocol) address e.g. 172.68.200.60.
•For the workstation to access information from the server, both the server
and client must be configured (i.e. inserting pre-define settings)
•
•In the server, the information is organised in a special format and is called a
WEBSITE.
•A website may be internal(intranet) or external i.e. Internet -This is an
INTERnational NETwork)
•Each website has a unique identification address.
•The address is in the form:
•www.name.com, www.name.ac.X, www.name.org
• This address is called the URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
• The website content is controlled by the systems administrator but if
you have the rights, you can move information(Files)from the Local
Machine (client) into the server . This is called uploading.
• To access information in a server you use a software called
Browser.
• Examples of browsers; Internet explorer, Mozilla, chrome,
• If you access and read information directly from the server,
it is termed as ONLINE access.
•However, if you have the rights, you can save the information
from the server to your Your local machine.
•Saving information from a server to your Local Machine is
called downloading.
•From your PC, you can access the downloaded information
offline- i.e. without having to login to the internet.
•Information is secured using a firewall,
• A firewall is a software or hardware which ‘sits’
between a server and workstation to prevent intruders.
•In addition to the firewall a username and a
password are used for identification of authorised
users (authentication) of a network resource.
