Learning Intentions
What we will learn:
• More about Client Server networks
• File servers
• Print servers
• What is the Internet?
• What is a NIC?
Learning Objectives
• To understand the different roles of a server in a client server network
• To understand what the Internet is
• To know what a NIC is and why it is required
Client Server Networks
• What is a client on this type of network?
• What are the roles of the server?
• File server
• Print server
File Server
• Provides central disk storage:
• Programs
• Data
• Greater amount of RAM and backing storage than
desktop computer
• Fast processor / Multiple processors
• Components should be of a higher quality
• Server running 24/7
• Server software
• Organise storage
• Handle security
Print Server
• Allows all clients to use a printer controlled by it
• Provide a queuing system
• Designed to work quickly
• Usually monochrome lasers
• Colour printers are becoming more common
• Printer will have its own processor
• It will also have sufficient amount of RAM
The Internet
• It is a WAN
• Wide Area Network
• Can be thought of as many different, smaller networks connected
together
• Known as a ‘network of networks’
• Each connected network may be:
• Of any size
• Use any hardware
• Be situated anywhere in the world
The Internet – ‘Network of Networks’
These networks can include:
• Governments
• Universities
• Multi-national companies
• Small company networks
• Individuals using Internet Service Provides (ISPs)
Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
What is an Internet Service Provider
• Company that provides a host computer
to which users can connect to
• Host computer manages the communications
• Stores data – email, web pages, files
• The host is connected to the Internet
• Subscribers can then connect with others
connected to the Internet
Network Interface Card - NIC
• Used to connect a computer to a network
• Three different types:
• Wired
• Wireless
Success Criteria
I know…
• The different roles of a server in a client server network
• About a file server and what it is used for
• About a print server and what it is used for
• What the Internet is and that it is a ‘network of networks’
• What a NIC is and why it is required
