Summary
• DVB … A broadcast dedicated technology
• DVB-H is based on DVB-T standard but designed for small,
portable devices like Mobile Phones.
•
•
Optimized reception in mobile environments through new modulation
and error correction mechanisms (better signal quality)
By the use of time-slices it is perfect suited for small, battery-powered
devices
• Advantages
•
•
•
•
•
Unlimited number of receivers
Up to 40 km coverage per transmitter
Around 20 AV streams with 300kbps
Hence an efficient technology for popular multimedia services
More than 80 manufacturers
•
Intel, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Alcatel-Lucent,…

Summary
• DVB supports IP since 2006 with IP Datacast
• DVB IP Datacast is a Service Provisioning Framework designed to provide IP
based services over DVB-H
•
Purchase and billing, service description, schedule and acquisition…
• Developed by the DVB CBMS (Convergence of Broadcast and Mobile
Services ) Working Group
•
•
•
•
This is the group IEEE 802.21 should cooperate with
Chairman: Georges Martinez (Motorola)
Most active partners: Nokia, Motorola, Philips, Samsung, France Telecom,
Siemens, Thomson, Expway, NDS…
There is a liasion to OMA BCAST
• Prof. Reimers:
“In my capacity as Chairman of the Technical Module of the International DVB Project, I strongly support the
inclusion of DVB-H in IEEE 802.21… It is clear that numerous companies are working on the integration of 3G
networks and this additional DVB-H broadcast downstream into "hybrid" network structures. The IEEE would
therefore be well advised to incorporate certain broadcast technologies in IEEE 802.21.”

DVB-H Interest and Timeline
• Initial presentation to 802.21 WG made in November’s 07
meeting
•
•
•
•
Hybrid Broadcast/Mobile Networks composed of 3GPP and IEEE
technologies have significant financial advantages for all mobile
network operators
Initial mobile TV services using hybrid networks in different
countries have shown that customer acceptance is very high
European Commission declared DVB-H as the official standard of
Europe for mobile broadcasting
IEEE 802.21 is well in the place of enabling optimized cooperation
of hybrid networks
• Second presentation to 802.21 WG made in January’s 08
meeting
•
•
•
Use cases for 802.21 with DVB-H
DVB-H as all the other wireless technologies has Cos and Pros
necessitating handovers
There are only minimal changes needed to integrate

DVB-H Interest and Timeline
• Straw poll in January 08 meeting showed there is relevant work to be done
in 802.21 for DVB Handovers
• 21 yes, 1 no, 1 abstain
• Motion accepted in January 08 to appoint Burak Simsek as the liaison
between 802.21 WG and the DVB Forum
• Teleconference held in with Prof. Reimers (DVB Chair Technical Module )
in February 08
• DVB Forum has assigned agenda time in June’s meeting for 802.21
presentation
 Technical Module (Chair Prof. Reimers … TU Braunschweig)
 CBMS (Chair Georges Martinez … Motorola)
 Mobility Task Group (Chair Gunther May … TU Braunschweig)
 Juan Carlos Zuniga will be making the presentation
 Liaison follows the presentation

Future Work
• Create a Study Group
• Purpose
• To determine what work, if any, is necessary to enable
DVB-H Handovers to other wireless technologies
• Study group will consider
• Handset, network and service provider input
• Specific requirements in 802.21 to support DVB-H
handovers
• Existing work in this area
• Goals and Timeframe
•
•
Keep agenda time to a minimum and hold most discussions over
email and teleconferences
2 plenary cycles

Handover from X to DVB-H
• Popular Multimedia Services, hence
unidirectional
• Handover is triggered by some means from
X to DVB-H
•
What kind of information do we need in order
to switch to the same IP Stream?
• Without any prior information it is possible
to have this information but takes too
long…

Scanning / Tuning
Finding the network
• Worst case: Whole Frequency
scanning (e.g. 470MHz – 862MHz)
•
NIT_actual – NIT_other
•
•
•
•
Reduces the frequencies to be scanned to a
specific list
If does not exits, either found
frequencies are used or whole scan is
carried on
For each found network, accomplish
tuning
Search within transport stream if the
service exits or not…

How to Locate Service
Identify IP Streams
• We should know what we are looking for in DVB-H
language…
•
•
IP Platform: A set of IP/MAC streams and/or receiver devices
managed by an organization
The IP/MAC platform concept allows for the coexistence of several
non-harmonized IP/MAC address spaces on the same DVB
network.
• Two IP streams carry the same IP datagram stream if all
the following conditions are true:
•
•
•
•
Source IP addresses are identical.
Destination IP addresses are identical.
IP streams are associated with the same IP platform.
Destination IP address is not in unicast range,
•
Multicast Addresses in DVB-H are globally defined
• Need IP matching since IP addresses are different in IP
Platforms…
•
From unicast/multicast to multicast

IP Matching
• Platform_id and IP source/destination addresses
must be available in case there is no PID
available
•
•
•
Multicast IP addresses are uniquely defined, hence IP
addresses can be saved before
ESG (Electronic Service Guide) of DVB-H provides
IP Platform ID and IP Address of all available
service…
MIIS can provide with the ESG similar data enabling
faster IP Platform ID – IP address information
acquisition

Handover Overview XDVB-H
• In case service exists over DVB-H make handover
decision
•
•
Else DAIDALOS could consider creating the service in case of
demand, but currently DVB-H would not…(no .21 problem)
They target customized services as the next steps…
• No resource availability check (avoid this)
• Inform DVB Network about the handover complete
(optional)
• Inform WLAN Network about handover complete
(optional)
•
Multicast leave can be synchronized with this information
