Voice over Internet
Protocol (VOIP)
What is VOIP?
This is a software or hardware that is used by
persons to communicate via the internet by
sending voice data, this is like a telephone call
over the internet.
Advantages of VOIP

An advantage of VOIP is that the telephone calls over the
Internet do not incur an added amount beyond what the user
is paying for Internet access, much in the same way that the
user doesn't pay for sending individual e-mails over the
Internet.
 By using a phone adaptor (ATA), the VoIP technology can
travel anywhere where the user can connect to a broadband
connection.
VOIP Applications.
Two applications used for VOIP are Skype and IChat. These
applications allow the user to connect with their friends and
families. For Skype the community is well developed on the
web. Skype is also a VoIP service provider. PC to PC calls are
free while PC to Phone calls (Skype In and Skype Out) are
paid.
Telnet
What is Telnet?
Telnet is a terminal emulation program for TCP or IP networks
such as the Internet. The Telnet program runs on your computer
and connects your PC to a server on the network. You can then
enter commands through the Telnet program and they will be
executed as if you were entering them directly on the server
console.
A
Computer which uses Telnet
Advantages and
Disadvantages
• An advantage is that many services and most
library catalogs on the Internet remain
accessible today only through the telnet
connection
• Disadvantages include that telnet tends to
have problem printing and saving files and its
primitive look and feel when compared to
more modern web browsers.
Telnet Applications.
Linux and Windows 7 and lower are applications which
use Telnet. Linux is an operating system,
it was originally developed as
a free operating system for Intel x86based personal computers.
It has since been ported to more computer hardware
platforms than any other operating system.
