Blackboard LMS
(Learning Management System)
•
•
•
BLACKBOARD: Blackboard is the name of the corporation
that provides CWU’s technology for online classes (web
based classes).
LEARN: Learn is the name of Blackboard’s online learning
application. Accessible over the WWW from anywhere in
the world. Asynchronous instruction
MOBILE LEARN: Provides access to online classes via
iPads, iPhones, iPods and Droids!
–
No! Not this Blackboard!
Yes, you can take your online class while riding the bus, laying on the
beach, attending an event … but don’t do it while you’re walking or
driving!
So when your student says “I’m taking a class in Blackboard” …
you’ll know what they mean! Same as saying “I’m taking an online class”
or “I’m taking a class over the web”.
CWU Alert!
•
•
CWU ALERT! First Response System!
Notification is sent to all students, faculty
and staff in the event of a safety related
emergency! (land-lines, mobile phones,
text messages, emails, etc.)
DESKTOP ALERT! First Response System!
Notification sent to:
–
–
•
All campus desktop/laptop computers connected
to the network.
All student RESNET computers, if they “opted in”
when connecting their computer in the Residence
Hall (ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO THIS)!
ALERT UPDATE SYSTEM! Post incident
“update” system that anyone can subscribe
to (parents, community, media, etc.) This
is not a First Response System!
–
SUBSCRIBE AT: www.cwu.edu/alert
Student safety is our #1 priority
VISIT www.cwu.edu/alert for more information
about these, and other related services.
Encourage your students to keep all their contact
Information current in our SAFARI System, and to
authorize alerts via Text Messaging!!!!
WIRELESS Local Area Network (WLAN/WiFi)
•
•
•
•
CWU has WiFi coverage in all Academic, Administration and Student Services
Buildings; and in many outdoor venues.
Wireless Modernize Project in 2012, Expansion Project scheduled for 2013!
RESNET wireless is limited to the newer/renovated facilities (Wendell Hill Hall
and Barto, with basic coverage in Kamola and Sue Lombard)
CWU has multiple wireless “environments” depending on who you are:
–
–
–
–
HOSTREG: The “Host Registration” wireless network is used by students, faculty and staff to initially &
securely set up their computers on CWU’s WLAN
CWU: Secure network used by students, faculty and staff to access all of the services and systems located on
the CWU Network (LAN)
GUEST: Only accessible by “Guest” accounts, and provides only access to the Internet. Access to CWU’s
internal systems/services is not allowed.
CWU-DISCOVER: For special occasions (like Discover Orientation) … and OPEN wireless environment may be
provided for temporary periods of time, with limited authentication and security needs.

like a kitten!
In the Residence Hall …
(Residential Network = ResNet)
•
Network Connectivity:
–
Within each Residence Hall there is a high-speed network “port per pillow”. Each student has their own
dedicated network access. When you arrive at CWU, just plug your computer into the network (bring
your own CAT-5/Ethernet Cable) and follow the instructions.
•
•
•
•
•
Telephone Service:
–
–
–
•
Standard Service (1.5 Mbs Connection Speed, 3 Gig usage/day) … no cost
Premium Service (3.0 Mbs Connection Speed, 6 Gig usage/day) … for $15/month
Computers will be checked for security patches, anti-virus protection, etc. Violators go
to “Cyber-Jail”! FREE Anti-Virus Software available via the Wildcat Connection.
All students must read and pass a short examination on appropriate technology usage.
Single phone line per room/suite. This line is “hot” and at no cost. Bring a phone, plug it in, and make all
the local calls you want. We recommend getting a calling card for long distance calls.
Wendell Hill Hall and Barto Hall … Telephone line can be converted to an additional data line (no cost) if
all occupants of the room agree and sign!
Less than 50% of CWU Residential Rooms use a land-line! (Nearly all CWU students have a mobile phone)
Cable/Media Service:
–
Cable Service (with Premium Channel) provided at no cost. Additional channels available for fee!
Illegal Peer-to-Peer (P2P) File Sharing
The illegal downloading/copying of Intellectual Property (IP) without permission. In this
situation, it primarily focuses on MUSIC and VIDEOS!!!
•
WE ARE REQUIRED BY LAW (US HEOA of 2008) TO:
–
–
–
Provide information and awareness to students describing copyright laws, campus policies, etc.
related to copyright infringement and illegal P2P sharing.
Implement a program to “effectively combat” copyright abuse on the campus network using “a
variety of technology-based deterrents”
Agree to “Offer Alternatives” to illegal downloading (There are many legal alternatives)
•CWU imposes escalating penalties (loss of Internet Access, etc.) for students caught attempting to illegally download IP.
•The RIAA and MPAA have successfully imposed severe fines (felony convictions) to students who violate DMCA laws.
