Computer Lab Use Policy






To obtain access to University designated computer labs you must
be faculty, staff, or a currently enrolled student and have a Pioneer
Portal Account established.
A valid TWU picture I.D. may be requested for verification of
current status at any time by an employee of the Instructional
Support Services Department. Individuals unable to establish
identity may be asked to leave the Computer Labs.
University computer labs support single copy printing only of all
documents.
Instructional Support Services reserves the right to monitor print
jobs and cancel any print jobs that exceed the single copy policy.
No cell phone use, food or open drink containers are permitted
inside the computer labs.
Recommended storage media are USB flash drives and Pioneer
Portal Storage. Zip drives are also available in some labs. Although
floppy disks are supported we have encountered information loss
and lack of stability during the save process with this
medium. Please make sure you have saved original copies of your
work as a back-up, regardless of whatever medium you choose.
Technology Use Policy


Access to the information resource infrastructure both within the University and beyond the
campus, sharing of information, and security of the intellectual products of the academic
community, all require that each and every user accept responsibility to protect the rights of other
users. Any member of the University community who, without authorization, accesses, uses,
destroys, alters, dismantles or disfigures the University information resources, properties or
facilities, including those owned by third parties, thereby threatens the atmosphere of increased
access and sharing of information, threatens the security within which members of the
community may create intellectual products and maintain records and engages in unethical and
unacceptable conduct.
Access to the information technology systems at the University is provided as a privilege and
must be treated as such by all users of these systems. Members of the University community
should strive for the most responsible use of the institution's resources. Users accept the
responsibility to:
1. Respect the legal protection provided by copyright and licensing of programs and data.
2. Respect the privacy and rights of other users.
3. Respect the intended usage of resources.

Information resources in this statement are meant to include any information in electronic or
audiovisual format or any hardware or software that make possible the storage and use of such
information (i.e., electronic mail, local databases, externally accessed databases, CD-ROM, motion
picture film, recorded magnetic media, photographs, digitized information, voice mail, faxes).

network and the internet.
ResNet enables you to easily perform many tasks from
your own room at no extra charge.
If needed, the ResNet staff will assist you in configuring
your computer.

Viruses and File Sharing



Always use an anti-virus program! An anti-virus
program is designed to protect your computer from
possible virus infections. A computer without anti-virus
software will become infected with viruses.
Recommended anti-virus programs can be downloaded
from www.Mcafee.com, www.Symantec.com,
www.grisoft.com or www.trendmicro.com.
File sharing programs like Aimster, Morpheus, KaZaA,
Bearshare, etc. are expressly forbidden on the
ResNet system.
If file sharing programs or viruses are detected on your
ResNet data port, you will be disconnected from the
ResNet system.
Spyware Information
What is spyware:
You may be familiar with free software, cookies, media players, and file
sharing from the internet. What you may not realize is that some of the
these applications and tools may contain malicious code or components
that allow the developers to collect and disseminate information about
you. They can track your surfing habits, abuse your Internet connection,
profile your shopping preferences, hijack your browser start page, or
alter important system files. This will all happen without your knowledge
or permission. The security and privacy implications of these exploits is
obvious and undesirable on any system or network.
Some free anti-spyware software for your computer:
Not every program will catch everything. It’s a good idea to have more than one
program to ensure complete coverage, if you have the disk space for it.

Windows Updates
Many new viruses take advantage of defects in the Windows operating system.
Viruses and worms such as “Blaster” and its variants will infect a computer
running Windows 2000 and XP as soon as it is connected to a high speed
network if the proper Windows updates and patches are not installed.
Critical Windows Updates in 6 Easy Steps
Due to the fact that new Windows security issues are discovered very
frequently, we encourage students to run Windows Update at least once a
week.
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Type windowsupdate.microsoft.com in the address bar to get to the
Windows Update site.
3. Please note that you can also access this web page by going to
Windows Update in your start menu.
4. Click the Scan for updates link, and your computer will be scanned.
5. Click on Review and install updates.
6. Click Install Now. The install will run, and then you will be done.
Housing - DHCP
In order to connect to the network, your computer must be set to
automatically acquire an IP address. This is the address it needs to
communicate with other computers on the internet. For information on
how to do this, click on your operating system.
