Green code has been restored as although the legal action continues, the scope of impact on the activity has been managed. A
replacement function for this part of CAT is due for the new year via a subcontract, the affected deliverable has been rebenchmarked.
A number of people will be leaving the project before the end of this year.

• The Commission services will, in future, more closely examine each request for an extension to the
duration of the project to ensure that they are only given where there is a clear added value for the
project, or where external events (not reasonably foreseeable at the point of signing the grant) mean
that it is impossible to complete the work in the agreed timeframe.

• SA1: Network Services
• SA1 Study of NRENs fibre and optical networks - 10 NRENs completed
• SDN IP and BOW and path computation proof of concepts progressing, pilots planned for Q1 2016.
• Regional study implementation all complete. Ireland, Nordic and Baltic connectivity reconfiguration and SEE
connectivity
• Solution agreed to solve GEANT router 100G port shortage problem – 4 port 100G cards will be used in
routers that require additional 100G ports to replace dual port cards, dual port cards will be reused to
replace single port cards, shortage of slot capacity will trigger the creation and deployment of a low speed
chassis at sites. 1& 10G ports will be migrated off MX 960 to unused MX480s
• Negotiation complete with Interxion at Frankfurt, Paris and Vienna and contracts signed, recuing power cost
by €250k pa
• Support deal signed with Infinera, capping support and delivering a saving of €540k in 2017 and €300k of
hardware
• Analysis complete to expand PoP housing capacity in London – site and fibre providers chosen, contracts
being negotiated, RFS date target end of January.
• MX routers finally upgraded to version of JuNOS that supports netflo v9 after 18 months of working with
Juniper to obtain JuNOS code that works - migration to separate AS and VPN for Internet traffic will begin
soon

• SA2: Testbeds
• Held the first of two GTS Tech+Futures Workshop (20-22/10) with excellent participation, and good
discussions on how the users would GTS to evolve.
• Attended the GLIF workshop in Prague (28-30/9) demoing GTS, as well as EWSDN in Bilbao (30/9- 2/10)
with both a GTS demo and lightning talk.
• Deployed PODS at three new sites in Milan, London and Hamburg.
• SA3: Network Delivery and Support
• Stefan Metzger is the new Task Leader for SA3T1 - Security Service Development.
• eduSAFE platform has been changed to OpenVPN. Have tested single tunnel capacity in the range of
200Mb/s between CPH and STC. Portal has been upgraded with federated login making it easy for users to
test.
• WIFImon deplyeded at NORDUnet conference, additional experience found and described in deliverable.​
• CMon working with GTS to help them monitor links.

• SA4 ​Production Application Services and Infratsructure
• FaaS transition - SA5 and SA4 finalizing steps for the service transition into operation.
• "School for developers" organized and held in Poznan, in cooperation with NA1T7, and got very positive
feedback from participants.
• SA5: Trust and Identity Service Development
• Green code has been restored as although the legal action continues, the scope of impact on the activity

• SA7: Supply Chain Support
• Around 30 providers interested in our IaaS tender
• Tender will take 3 months longer to complete because of external legislative aspects.
• SA7 is making online services available in several areas:
• Facilitating the use of OwnCloud online file storage (many NRENs now use this)
• Helping NRENs deploy the open source Rendez-Vous (JITSI) web conferencing platform, as spearheaded by
RENATER.
• 5 NRENs now active
• Making the Okeanos IaaS platform from GRNET wider available
• looking at use within the GN4 project.
• Facilitating knowledge sharing on OpenStack.
• SA8: Real-Time Appplications and Multimedia Management
• The WebRTC task drafted a straw-man proposal that will form the basis of the WebRTC Roadmap
deliverable.
• The GÉANT OER service development (SA8 Task 3) is right on track, we are expecting the pre-launch of the
user portal by the end of the year.

• JRA1: Future Network Topologies
• JRA1 and GÉANT 4th Network Architects Workshop successfully passed 19-22 of October in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Workshop attracted near 40 present and remote participants from more than 20 NREN’s and organisations. Plenty
of time dedicated for internal and cross task meetings, which gave valuable results.
• JRA2: Future Network Services
• Task 1 has completed M14.2 Future Network Services Specification. All JRA2 SDN use cases are now defined and
analysed
• Task 2 has completed M14.1 Software component repository and initial requirements to features matrix. A
software development plan is in place, implementation has started with SDN BoD and SDN IP use cases
• The activity is in now in existing hardware/software testing phase (T1-T3) and software development phase (T2)
(for requirements not met by existing controllers)
• Current JRA2 developments related to the consolidation of services communicated to the product management
team and SA3
• JRA3: Trust and Identity Reseacrh
• JRA3T1: Presentation of eduKEEP at I2 TechEx, positive feedback
• JRA3T2: Two disccussion sessions for OIDC federations (at IIW and I2 TechEx)
• JRA3T3: ​GNTB ideas and work done so far presented at the ‘ZKI Verzeichnisdienste Herbsttreffen’ ​(German IdPs)

• Preparing for ICT (21-22 Oct); invited users MD-PAEDIGREE and CARDIOPROOF - these 2 projects are about to
create the first Big Data and Model-Driven decision support system for paediatrics, connecting 7 hospitals across
Europe.
• Global PR Network - a visual blog platform to demonstrate the impact of R&E networks around the world (led by
AARNet)
• Case for NREN portal - regional projects and GÉANT
• Services and JRA marketing/comms planning - esp. Vidyo service, Open Paris, Federation as a service, GTS, CBP.
• TF-CPR meeting in Cambridge, 28-30 October
• Building a responsive website for GEANT which incorporates the project information and activities as part of this.
• Schedule of web work including integration of web functionality, establishing wiki look and feel/branding for TF
and other "collaborative working", review microsites.

• NA3: Status and Trends
• NA3 T1 2015 data is collected and section authors from community recruited (1 outstanding). Relevant data
distributed to the section authors
• NA3 T2 & T3 regular meetings leading to deliverables
• NA3 T4 full programme of TF and SIG meetings running including cross groups meetings and workshops.
• NA4: International Business Development
• The interconnection between GÉANT and ESA’s Copernicus Ground Segment network has been agreed (via DFN)
and contracts are at signature
• A birds-of-a-feather session on Science Engagement has been co-organised at SC15 along with Internet2 and ESnet
• A number of NREN visits have taken place including a trip to ESnet in Berkeley –outcomes focussed on closer
working relationships for large international users
• A contract has been agreed with CERN to provide a second 100Gbps Lambda service between Geneva and
Budapest
• A new interconnection with the Japanese NREN, SINET is being established via 20Gbps of SINET-funded capacity
from Tokyo-London. GÉANT is assisting with hosting a SINET router in London
• GÉANT was represented at the EGI Forum in Bari, Italy –one area of interest is a discussion of plans for the Open
Science Cloud (outcome TBD)
