Network & Internet
• Exactly what is seen here will depend on
the computer. Example: my main
computer does not have a wireless
adapter, nor a broadband (cellular)
adapter.
• Those would be shown on something
like a tablet with wireless and cellular
connections.
Network: Data usage
• Overview – data usage from last 30
days (usage details will show usage
by application)
• Related settings (switches to storage
settings from System menu)

• On devices with wireless and/or
cellular connections, shuts off ALL
with one on/off switch

Metered networks – Allow connect

• Note that many commercial VPN
types require their own specific

Network: Dial-up
• Setup a new connection (Control
Panel)
• (yes, there are still places where dial-
up is all that is available at any
moderate price)
Network: Ethernet
• Ethernet (the default name is Local Area
Connection – click on the icon)
• Make this PC discoverable – (this one is
important, can change public vs private
network here)
• Properties (IP address, DNS servers, etc.)
• (Missing but should be– cannot set an
Ethernet port as a metered connection)
Network: Proxy
• Automatic proxy setup
(automatically detect, use setup
script)
• Manual proxy setup (use a proxy
server, IP address, port, except for)
• (Proxy servers are more likely in a
corporate environment)

lives here

Accounts
• This is a very important section.
Microsoft accounts are in email form
([email protected]) Local accounts
are in older Windows form (Joeblow)
• This is also where family accounts are
setup, with the ability to allow limited
access
Accounts: Your email & accounts
• At the top, the logged on username will be
displayed, with info on whether user is an
administrator or not.
• Manage my Microsoft account – this link
leads to a web page where Microsoft
accounts can be changed and managed. Note
that Windows 10 computers are trusted or
not – the account holder must provide a
phone or text method of verification.
Accounts: Your email & account
• The Microsoft web page is also where
arrangements are made to setup financial
information (credit card) for making
purchases from the Microsoft store.
• Product keys, subscription information, and
so forth is stored as a part of your Microsoft
account.
Email & Accounts
• Microsoft accounts can also be setup to
have a couple of added email addresses
called “alias.” This can be useful if your
account email provider suddenly goes
dead. One of the aliases is the primary.
• You cannot get apps from the Microsoft
store without logging in with a Microsoft
account (and paying for the non-free apps)
Email & accounts
• Sign in with a local account instead. (most
commonly used in business, but very useful as a
backup way to access Windows if your profile gets
hosed)

Accounts used by other apps
