SIP Business Trunking – Signaling
Model
ISDN Like
Signaling is decoupled by IP-PBX and Media is
anchored by the IP-PBX using a Media
Termination Function to emulate a PBX
behaviour
Pure SIP
Signaling goes peer-to-peer between IP-PBXs
Hierarchic
Signaling between IP-PBXs is manipulated by a
centralized harmonization function (HF) that
can also anchor the media

SIP Business Trunking - User Plane
Models
Fixed Media RTP is anchored by IP-PBX
The core network it is not affected by media
changing related to services invocation
IP-PBX needs a Media Termination Function to
perform media anchoration
Variable Media RTP is peer-to-peer
The core network must manage all the RTP
negotiatons due to user services invocation
IP-PBX can implement various type of services
and use several types of codecs

Network Semplification
A measure of complexity can be assessed
in proportion to the possible combination of
all the devices involved.
When a new domain is added, the
complexity with IDAD is significantly minor
than without:

ITU Standardization vs IDAD
The strengthening of the standards is the main way to
go forward for multi-vendor interoperable solutions,
but it’s a must also consider the presence of several
small/medium players that perform customization to
provide services.
IDAD is the trade-off between time to market and
standardization.
