ZENMAP
A GUI network auditing tool
By Coel Healy
Introduction
Zenmap is a small Open-source program based
on the popular Nmap program. Zenmap offers a
GUI which is preferred over the very outdated
command line based Nmap.
Zenmap is available free from:
http://insecure.org
Differences
The differences between Nmap and Zenmap
are very small, the functionalities are basically
the same. Only Zenmap offers the convenience
of a GUI as well as a visual logical-topology of
your network that is created when you scan.

IP range scanning
Zenmap offers a range of unique features to
scan networks. The main feature is the ability to
enter an IP range for the program to scan. For
example: 10.1.1.1-100
The program would then scan through all 100
designated IP’s using the method you select.
The scans can be configured to how much
detail you want, for example you can chose an
advanced scan which scans more ports than
the regular scan.
Port Scanning
Zenmap scans are more than
just an average ping
command. You can chose
which ports you want the
program to scan as well as a
variety of advanced features
such as packet fragmentation
and decoy packets to detect
PC’s hidden behind a
firewall.
Information Gathering
Zenmap can gather a variety
of information about a
scanned IP address.
Including:
-The number of open ports
-Last boot time
-Operating System
-Running services
What can Zenmap be used for
Some of the Possible uses of Zenmap include:
-Security Auditing
-Finding any “unwanted” people using your network
-Creating simple visual diagrams of your network
