Summary of Requirements
• Deployment of GMPLS technology in existing
IP/MPLS networks
It is neither desirable nor practical to expect all routers to be
GMPLS aware.
The service networks can be non-GMPLS (e.g., all IP or legacy
service networks).
Need to find ways for (incremental) deployment of the optical
regions with
– minimum-to-no reconfiguration of the existing router region
and vice versa.
– No upgrade in the existing IP/MPLS routers.
– Be able to make efficient use of resources in a heterogeneous
network of routers and optical nodes/ devices.
– Failure Transparency. A failure in optical network does not
affect routing in packet networks, and vice versa.

Draft Summary
• GMPLS Deployment consideration is are a near charter item.
• “draft-oki-ccamp-gmpls-ip-interworking-05.txt” already exists,
It describes some migration scenarios from MPLS to GMPLS
using the integrated model.
• GMPLS architecture document lists three different scenarios in
which GMPLS technology can be deployed:
Overlay,
Augmented
Integrated.
• This draft addresses GMPLS Deployment using the augmented
model and illustrates the applicability of augmented model in
deploying GMPLS technology in existing IP/ MPLS networks.

Optical Topology
• The “Augmented model” is a hybrid model between the full Peer and
Overlay models.
• Border Routers receive routing information from the optical devices as
well as routers.
• Border router keeps the optical and router domain topology information
in separate routing tables.
• No routing information from the router region is carried into the optical
region, and vice versa.
