Why Fax over IP?
• Customers are transitioning from PSTN to IP environments to reduce costs
• Conventional fax was designed to transmit over analog PSTN & work poorly
(or not at all) on IP systems
• Protocols used for communication over IP environments:
– Session Initiation Protocol (SIP): used to control communication over
IP networks
– T.38 fax relay standard: devised to permit faxes to be transported
across IP networks between existing Group 3 (G3) fax terminals.
The WorkCentre 7120/7125’s Fax over IP Kit:
• Sends and receives faxes using the T.38 and SIP protocols
• Requires customers to have a SIP server or a T.38 compliant VoIP
gateway:
– With Customer’s SIP server, enables existing phone numbers or user
names to be designated for destination
– With VoIP gateway, enables IP fax to be transmitted to G3 fax (not IP
Fax compliant) connected to a public line
– Without VoIP gateway or SIP server, enables IP faxes to transmit
across intranet to another IP fax-compliant device
