One-line Comment
• They set up Treasure, an outdoor mobile
multiplayer game, and examined players’
tactics and strategies.
Motivation
• Nobody knows
– A creative and intensive use of new tech.
• A good illustration of a new technology?
– Games!
– Games can serves well in demonstrating and
generating new design ideas
Motivation on the ‘Treasure’
Weak

Area
Effectively!
== Error?
Strong Signal Area
Game Play
Score : 1
• There’re coins on the playing field
• People can pick the coin by ‘Pickup’
• People can upload the coin by ‘Upload’
– Collaborative upload : double points
Game Play (cont’d)
• People can pick other’s pocket by
‘pickpocket’
• People also can use ‘shield’ for guarding
from the pickpocket (for 1 min, w/charging)
Game Play (cont’d)
• Upload, Pickpocket, Shield can be
performed within the wireless network
– Upload success rate is proportional to the
strength of the signal
• Pickup can be performed always
Pickup
Upload, Pickpocket, Shield,
Pickup
Game Play (cont’d)
• If one’s connection is lost, his or her last
position is marked in others’ map display,
and others cannot find him or her
– (fun stuff!?)
???
Very few
technical issues
• On .Net Compact Framework w/C#
• The Server ‘heartbeats’ the game state,
broadcasting all game state information
– Would not scale well
• Lock on SSID and connect only to that
• Use static IP address : quick connection
• ‘Replayer’ application
• Um, …
User Trials
• Team set-up
– Nine teams of two
– 17 to 33 ages, mean of 23.5
– No 기계치
• Area
– 7000 square-meters
• Award
– Small prize for reasons of motivation
Data collection Method
• Replayer tool
• Interview
Results
• As the game is played…
– Pickpocket rate is increased with 550%
– Collaborative upload rate is decreased w/10%
– Average score is increased with 30%
• Analysis
– People was aware of the risk and usefulness
of pickpocketing
Tactics
• 180˚ turn
– Adjusting the position to gather coins
– Getting back into the network
• Spy look
– Standing still for a couple of seconds, and looking up
and then around as if anyone was nearby
• Collaborative Searching
• Pickpocketing others and running away
– So that the opponents could not steal the coins back
Tactics (pictures)
Strategies
• Hunter
– The players who boldly picked up as many of
the coins as they could
• Gatherer
– The players who preferred to finding the coins
• Hunting seemed to work better than
gathering
Discussion
• How players came to interpret and use the new
media of the game with the old media?
• What is the players’ stuff on the ubicomp?
– Treasure may assist in finding that
• 실제로 이루어지는 action을 이용하여 user의 행
동이 system에 미치는 영향을 분석할 수 있다
– Ubicomp에서, 사람들의 행동양식을 예상하여야 하는
application design에 유용하다
Future work
• Scaling to larger areas
• Using peer-to-peer methods
• Um, …
