ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
International standard for switched, digital dial-up
telephone service for voice and data. Analog
telephones and fax machines are used over ISDN
lines, but their signals are converted into digital by the
ISDN terminal adapter (see below).
IP (Internet Protocol)
IP uses a packet-switched architecture, in which
data are broken up into smaller "packets," with each
packet containing a source address and destination
address. IP packets are handed over to a data link
layer protocol, such as Ethernet, for the actual,
physical transmission to the next node in the network
path.
Codec - (enCOder/DECoder or COmpressor/DECompressor)
Software or hardware that compresses and
decompresses audio and video data streams. The
purpose of this type of codec is to reduce the size of
digital audio samples and video frames in order to
speed up transmission and save storage space
CPU
(Central Processing Unit) The computing part of the
computer. Also called the "processor”. Today, the
CPUs of almost all computers are contained on a
single chip. May be separate computer, may be
integrated.
Non-profit consortium collaboration among more
than 100 U.S. universities to develop networking and
advanced applications for learning and research
connects over 60,000 U.S. educational, research,
government and "community anchor" institutions,
from primary and secondary schools to community
colleges and universities, public libraries and
museums to healthcare organizations
