Network Problems Found
• 38% of Traffic to Acme and Internet Lost.
• RIP Broadcasts waste 30% of Bandwidth
to Internet.
• Over 9,000 ICMP Redirects in One Hour Slowed Internet Access by Remote Users.
More Problems Found ...
• Excessive Remote Collisions in I.S.’s LAN
Segment - over 463 per second.
• IPX Routing Problem in I.S.’s LAN.
• Incorrect IP Addresses.
• Inefficient Use of Network Numbers
causing unnecessary Internal IP
Routings.
More Problems Found ...
• Inefficient Use of Network Numbers
causing unnecessary Internal IP
Routings.
• Circuit to Remote Site reaching close to
recommended average maximum
utilization of 30%.
• Lack of Disaster Recovery Plan or Site.
Resolution
• Reduced Lost Traffic to Acme and
Internet to less than 1% by replacing
Wellfleet.
• Reduced ICMP Redirects to less than 40
per hour with change of default gateway
for AccessBuilder.
• Eliminated Unnecessary IP Subnets in
Port 1, thus reducing internal routings.
Resolution … more
• Network Address Translation completed
for 192.168.x.x network, eliminating
upcoming network address problem.
• To control and correct erroneous IP
addresses - prototyped DHCP at two sites
in the 192.168.x.x network for
deployment throughout WAN.
Recommendation
• Collapse networks in Port 1 and Port 1B
to One.
• Eliminate one of the network cards for
Server(s) connecting to Port 1B.
• Replace LinkSwitch 500 in Port 1 with a
High-Performance 10/100 switch, such as
a Cisco 2924 XL.
Recommendation
- Collapsing Port 1 and Port 1B Networks to One

Benefits
• Provide for Growth of LAN in Port 1C.
• Improve Performance of LAN in Port 1C.
• But most of the gains would not be
realized until the Servers are equipped
with 10/100 Network Interface Cards.
Recommendation
• Change to 10.x.x.x Private Class B
Network.
• Deploy DHCP to make the above change.
Benefits
• Eliminate Address Constraint.
• Eliminate Dependency on Address
Assignment by Internet Service Provider.
• Ease of Control and Management with
DHCP.
Recommendation
for 12 Months and beyond
• Replace NetBuilder II in LAN Routing with
Layer 3 (IP and IPX) Ethernet Switch.
• Deploy GigaEthernet or at least
EtherChannel at 800Mbps to switches in
IDF’s.
Recommendation
for 12 Months and beyond
• Consolidate all servers to Server Room.
• Deploy GigaEthernet to Servers where
needed and possible.

Benefits
• Increase Performance between LAN
Ports.
• This would be critical as IP Traffic
increases due to deployment of Exchange
and other IP-based Applications.
• Ease of Management and Control with
Servers in Server Room.
Benefits
• GigaEthernet would give more room to
grow while providing greater ease of
implementation and management versus
other technologies such as ATM and
FDDI.
Recommendation
• Replace Circuit to Remote Site with Full
T1 Frame Relay.
• Setup Remote Site as a Disaster
Recovery Backup site for Local Site.
Benefits
• Provide Growth Capacity to Remote Site.
• Provide Disaster Recovery Site.
Benefits Review
• Gained back 40% of bandwidth to
Internet.
• Reclaimed performance by Remote Users
using AccessBuilders.
• Eliminated one of the bottlenecks in the
Server LAN (Port 1) - internal IP routings.
Benefits Review
• Enhance Access to Servers by users
currently in Port 1B by eliminating
excessive collisions and IPX routing
problems.
• Increase performance and growth for
users in Port 1C.
Benefits Review
• Eliminate Address Constraint and
Dependency.
• Ease of Control and Management of IP
Addressing.
• Ease of Management and Control of
Servers.
Benefits Review
• Substantial increase in growth and
performance with GigaEthernet while
retain ease of management and
deployment.
• Growth and Performance for Remote
Site.
• Disaster Recovery Plan and Site.
