Slide 2
Ethernet
• IEEE 802.3
• Fast Ethernet
– 100 Mbps
– Cat 5 (100BASE-T) or fiber (100BASE-FX)
– Hubs or switches
• Gigabit Ethernet
– 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps)
– 1000BASE-T / 1000BASE-SX / 1000BASE-LX
– Switches only
• 10G
– 10 Gbps

Slide 5
Internet Protocol and IP Addressing
• 32-bit IP address in dotted decimal format
• Subnet mask masks part of address as
network ID with remainder host ID
• Classful addressing uses fixed length masks
and divides IP ranges into classes (A, B, C)
• Private address ranges for each class (nonroutable over the internet)
• Unicast, broadcast and multicast
2.1 Server Networking
Slide 6
Subnetting
• Excessive broadcast traffic is created when
there are more hosts on the same network
• Useful to divide a network into logically
distinct zones for security and administration
• Allocate host bits to a subnet ID

Configuring TCP/IP
• Parameters
– IP address (required)
– Subnet mask
(required)
– Default gateway
(required for routing)
– DNS server (usually
required for name
resolution)
• DHCP
