WHAT IS THE APT?
The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) is a regional
organization for the development of
telecommunication services and information
infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region with a
particular focus on the expansion in less
developed areas.
The APT was established in May 1979 by the United
Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia
and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The APT Secretariat is located in Bangkok,
Thailand.

WHAT WE DO?
The APT contributes to the development of telecom and
ICT industry by:
- Promoting the expansion of telecommunication
services and information infrastructure;
- Developing regional cooperation in areas of common
interest;
- Undertaking studies relating to developments in
telecom and information infrastructure technology and
policy and regulation,
- Encouraging technology transfer, human resource
development and the exchange of information; and
- Facilitating coordination within the region.

- APT Study Groups
ASTAP Expert Group on NGN
ASTAP Expert Group on Next Generation Networks (NGN) was
established to:
- Finalize the responses to a questionnaire on migration to packet
networks.
- Submit APT contributions to the ITU-T, based on the
questionnaire responses.
- Share information (based on the responses) with member
countries on migration to packet networks.
- Study the integrated management aspects of NGN.
- Study the mobile network management function of NGN.
- Organize a seminar/workshop on NGN.
- Study the Next Generation Operation Support System (NGOSS).

Expert Group on NGN continues
survey on NGN R2 service in aim
to develop a proposal to ITU-T.
The EG continue efforts to
develop NGN guide book
however contents and specific
time frame to complete it has not
been fixed.
The EG sought comments from
EG members on draft of the APT
common proposal on End-usercentric NGN multimedia terminal
requirements.
The EG reviewed latest status on
NGN Release 2 scope in ITU-T
SG13 and methods of jointdevelopment of the NGN
Guidebook among ASTAP
members.

- Support the development of e-enabled services and eapplications to promote the use of ICT.
Industry
- Promote dialogue between policy
maker/regulator/operators and the business community.
- add value for affiliate members by organizing meetings
between the policy makers/regulators, operators and
suppliers.
OTHER KEY WORK AREAS
Intra-regional and Inter-regional coordination
and cooperation
- Coordinate effectively between APT members and with
other partner organizations operating within the region.
- Enhance its global presence and continue to be the
premium organization for members to interact with global
activities.
- Seek to find common views in the Asia Pacific region on
policy and regulation matters and present them at the
relevant global forums, particularly for the ITU
Plenipotentiary 2010.
