Major Scope of Works
(IP Backbone)
 Construction of IP backbone network connecting various
important cities of Bangladesh. Total 62 IP PoPs has
ben constructed
 Construction of a high capacity optical transport network,
as IP based services are bandwidth hungry. Total 49
Transmission nodes (DWDM & MSPP) has been
installed.
 Construction of more than 1450 km optical transmission
networks for connecting Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet
Divisional cities and some important district cities. Out of
which 300 km in EDCF loan and rest are in GoB fund.
7
Major Scope of Works
(Access Networks)
• PON based optical Access networks is being built in 4
exchanges (Moghbazar, Central, Gulshan and SB
Nagar) of Dhaka city
• ADSL based Access networks for about 24,000
subscribers in 74 nodes has been built for rendering
ADSL service over the existing copper cable networks in
32 districts and 4 upazilas.
• Besides, it will be possible to provide IP bandwidth
directly from the PoPs for medium and big subscribers
through IP switch.
• More than 100 km optical access network has also been
constructed to connect different government offices,
educational institutions and important locations.

II. Network Design
1. IP Network
1.1 Overview
INFO-BAHAN project applies the IP/MPLS technology as a national data
backbone network for the benefits of IP/MPLS as follows;
 MPLS is a high-performance packet forwarding technology that integrates the
performance and traffic management capabilities of data link layer (Layer-2)
switching with the scalability, flexibility and performance of network-layer
(Layer-3) routing.
 Next generation IP backbone network services such as all IP and BcN network
service are based on IP/MPLS technology.
 MPLS enables service providers to meet challenges brought about by
explosive growth and provides the opportunity for differentiated services
without necessitating the sacrifice of existing infrastructure.
 MPLS blends the intelligence of routing with the performance of switching,
enabling service providers to extend the capabilities of IP to large-scale VPN
implementations. So, using MPLS, VPNs have become much easier to deploy
and scale.
9
II. Network Design
1.2 Routing Protocol Design
1) OSPF design
 Deploy the OSPF(Open Shortest Path First) routing protocol as an IGP for
IP/MPLS network
• OSPF can be easily used for MPLS-TE(Traffic Engineering) if necessary
 To consider the BTCL’s administrative divisions and traffic patterns, new IP/MPLS
network is going to have 7 OSPF areas
 To accordance with the standard recommendation and experiences, less than 25
IP router
nodes is going to be grouped into one OSPF area
• Dhaka division has 2 OSPF areas
• Khulna division include Barisal will be combined into one OSPF area
 For simplicity for network topology, OSPF backbone area is the same as IP/MPLS
core domain

II. Network Design
2) MPLS Design
 Deploy the MPLS enabled IP network as an all IP converged network for various services
 Deploy the proven system in the carrier class network considering the stability for the
development of new services
 MPLS network is consisted of 2 layers, MPLS core and MPLS edge layer
MPLS Layer
Node
Link
MPLS Core
• CR(Core Router)
• Division border node
• STM-16 POS, N*GE
• Full mesh / Dual link
MPLS Edge
• IR(Interconnect balancing core network Router)
• VG(MPLS VPN Internet Gateway)
• Regional station node, Access edge node
• GE
• Star topology
 MPLS core layer
•MPLS P(Provider) router function
•MPLS core layers is the same as OSPF backbone area
(IR and VG are in the MPLS edge layer)
•For the stability of the MPLS network, STM-16 POS interface and redundant link routes are set
•IR & CR will have full mesh link
12
II. Network Design
 MPLS edge layer
•MPLS PE(Provider Edge) router function
•MPLS label is imposed and exposed at this layer
•Considering the efficient use of the existing transmission network, dark fiber based GE interface
and star topology is deployed
•Deploy MPLS VPN Internet gateway for MPLS VPN service stability
•Support high-density LAN and WAN interface for the MPLS VPN services(from N*DS0 to GE)
•Support transport layer 2 frame over MPLS(L-2 protocol)


6 B-RAS(Broadband-Remote Access Server) are to be installed in each division border node
(Moghbazar, Dhaka Central, Chittagong, Sylhet, Bogra and Khalishpur)

ADSL PPP session should be established from ADSL CPE to BRAS based on layer 2 connection
•
PPPoE(from DSLAM to router) and EoMPLS(from router to BRAS)
 Deploy the EoMPLS VPN between DSLAM and BRAS
35
•

1.7 IP/MPLS Service
1) Overview
 IP/MPLS service can be developed based on the categories as follows
• Internet access service
• Virtual leased line service(transport layer 2 frame over MPLS L2 VPN)
• L2/L3 VPN services(Silver service)
• L2/L3 VPN services with QoS(Gold service)
• L2/L3 VPN services with QoS and managed network service(Premium service)

Metro Ethernet
1) Overview
 As a high bandwidth access network, Metro Ethernet (ME) is deployed.
• ME node will be located in Dhaka division which has high bandwidth users
• 7 ME node and about 500 100Mbps access ports can be supported for large
subscribers
• 43 ME nodes and about 1,032 100Mbps access ports can be supported for SMB (Small
Medium Business) subscribers
• Basic interface to the user will be FE interface
• FE FX interface accommodate the long distance users by optical cable.
• Support the on demand bandwidth by rate limit solution less than the 1Mbps
• Large ME switch has the 96 ports FX
• SMB ME switch has at least 24 ports FX and expandable up to 48 ports
 Deploy IP/MPLS L3 switch to expand the MPLS PE function to the ME switch (Type E)
• Terminate VLAN broadcast domain at the ME switch
• Support the IP/MPLS VPN services to users.
• IP/MPLS VPN services can be beneficial to the users which have national wide branches.
 Deploy L2 switch to provide VLAN based internet connection (Type F)
VLAN solution is used to distinguish the users on the UNI (User Network Interface) port.
• Assign unique VLAN-ID per ME switch.
• Reuse of the VLAN-ID on the other ME switch
• OSPF routing based MPLS is configured on the uplink interface.

Explanation of authentication & billing flow
① B-RAS requests authentication to AAA when user tries to connect.
② AAA checks the user authentication
if success, proceeding to ③, if fail, disconnect the user request.
③ B-RAS sends accounting signal to AAA server.
④ AAA responds to the B-RAS
⑤ B-RAS sends service termination signal to AAA when user terminates the service.
⑥ AAA responds to the B-RAS
