Rome and America
• Classics tell us
about ourselves,
makes us question
notions.
• Republic=“Res
publica”-public
thing.
Question• . Looking back at Roman society through the
lens of the American experience of slavery,
what can we learn about Roman perceptions
of race and slavery in relation to current and
past American society?
Previous Work
• Most work focuses on individual aspects of
Rome and America, not a synthesis.
• I will contribute to this discussion by providing
a comparison between the two.
Rome
• Slavery intrinsically tied to
military conquest.
• Prejudice in the form of
racial stereotypes existed,
“environmental theory”.
Ante-bellum South
• Slavery intrinsically tied to
race.
• Intrinsically tied to
prejudice/racial tension,
seen to this day.
Methods
• The bulk of research will be examining primary
sources such as writing and artwork, as well as
reading other scholars’ interpretations of
these sources.
• Many of these primary sources and scholarly
works I can access via LMU’s network of
research databases.
