2) WORK AND LEISURE
• got up very early to WORK.
• went to baths to relax and meet people
• went to shows, circuses, and ampitheatres
Why were baths so popular with
the Romans?
• Roman baths were
more like a visit to a
leisure centre than a
quick scrub.
• The Romans loved the
baths because they
were a good place to
meet people and
business could be
conducted there.
• Then you might have a
swim before going
into a series of rooms
that made you hotter
and hotter to help you
sweat off the dirt.
• All the dirt and sweat
was then scraped off
with a STRIGIL (made
out of metal).

3) ROMAN CITIES
• Rome was the capital
• Others were smaller, but same structure
• Rectangular shapes with parallel streets
around two main axes
• Center of the city was a temple

4) ROME, CAPITAL OF AN EMPIRE
• The coliseum was the largest amphitheatre in
the world.
• The Panthenon was a temple for the gods.
• 64 AD-a fire destroyed Rome and they rebuilt
the city.

5) ECONOMIC ACTIVITES
• Agriculture was the main activity. Wheat,
grapes, and olive (Mediterranean triad)
• Crafts-small shops
• Mining-metals (gold, silver, tin, iron, copper,
lead, mercury, steel)
• Trade-China (spices, silk, cotton), Africa
(slaves), Iberian peninsula (the Mediterranean
triad)

6) Polytheism and Roman gods
• Polytheism (Do you remember the definition
from last year?)=many gods
• Adopted many of their gods from the Greeks
• Jupiter was the main god (Zeus in Greek)
• Rulers and emperors were sometimes
designated as gods

7) Christianity
• The Roman government saw Christianity as a
threat (dangerous) and persecuted its
followers.
• The first Christians refused to honor Roman
gods, so some Roman emperors had early
Christians arrested, imprisoned, and even
killed.
• But by the A.D. 300’s, Christianity had become
the main religion of the empire.
