THE TIME OF
THE ROMANS
By Eilah Kolvin
Rome is the capital city of Italy
This is the Italian flag
THE ROMAN ARMY
The Romans invaded
Britain in August 55 B.C.
Why the Romans
came to Britain is
not quite certain.
Two reasons
have been
suggested:
The Romans were
cross with Britain for
helping the Gauls (now
called the French) fight
against the Roman
general Julius Caesar.
They came to Britain looking for
riches - land, slaves, and most of
all, iron, lead, zinc, copper, silver
and gold.
The Romans stayed in Britain
from 43 A.D to 410 A.D
The Roman army was huge.
They recruited young men from all over Rome.
ROMAN BELIEFS
The Romans believed in many different
gods and goddesses. They sacrificed
animals like bulls, sheep and pigs.
The Romans worshipped the same
gods as the Greeks but under the
names of planets
e.g. Mars=Ares
Jupiter=Zeus
Neptune=Poseidon
Many people had shrines
in their houses with a
figure of their favourite
god.
They believed it was
important to keep the
gods happy with gifts
or statues.
ROMAN ENTERTAINMENT
Gladiators
The best way to get a man
to fight to the death is to
use a man who has
nothing to lose, which is
why slaves, criminals, and
prisoners-of-war were
ideal for the job.
If a man was really good, he
might keep winning and get his
freedom.
Acting in Amphitheatres
The largest
amphitheatre in the
empire was the
Colosseum.
Roman actors wore masks so the
audience could see their faces.
Chariot racing
The stadium (or circus) was used for
chariot racing.
ROMAN CLOTHES
Men wore a knee-length
tunic (chilton), either
sleeveless or short-sleeved.
Important
Romans dressed in a
long robe called a
toga.
Women wore a
longer tunic which
was often anklelength.
The Roman Empire grew and grew
until it was very powerful. Today
Rome is still famous and it will be
for many days to come.
