Why would you Build the
Colosseum???
The Purpose Was…
To provide an arena, in the centre of
Ancient Rome, where citizens of Rome
could go and watch free fights –
considered great entertainment!!!
To create an enormous structure that
would represent wealth, might and
power of Rome.
To ensure the popularity of Emperor
Vespasian. So that the Roman people
would not murder him (like the four
Emperors before him), he built something
the Romans would enjoy.
It was built to show off the exotic animals
from all around Rome.
They thought that to honour the dead, the
wealthy would hold funeral games that would
show their appreciation for the person who
passed away.
To make sure that Nero’s followers were on his
side, he ripped down Nero’s golden palace and
used the gold to buy all th equipment necessary
to build the Colossem. He then built it on the
site of the Golden Palace.
The Purpose of the Structure...
• The design of the Colosseum was to make sure
that everybody could see the fight.
• The Colosseum was built in an oval shape to
ensure that everybody could hear what was
going on the pit.
• Another reason why the Colosseum was built in
an oval, was to make sure the Gladiators could
not get stuck in a corner.
