Transcript How civilised were the Romans? - presentation
Starter activity. An image from the London riots in August 2011. This behaviour was
clearly uncivilized, but what do we mean when we describe a society as civilised? Use
examples from other periods of history you have studied.
How civilised were the
Romans?
Learning objectives
To investigate the key achievements of
the Romans
To prepare a presentation on an aspect
of Roman society
Your task
Watch the film, ‘What did the Romans do for
Us’ and answer the questions on the video task
sheet your teacher provides
List reasons why native Britons might have
resented some of the Romans new ideas and
inventions
Your task
Conduct a web quest and gather further
evidence on Roman achievements. Use the web
quest document your teach directs you to.
Read about the government of the Roman
Empire. How fairly do you think it was
governed?
Your task
You are each going to be given a topic to
research relating to how civilised or not the
Romans were. Your presentation should last no
more than 5 minutes. Discuss with your partner
what are some of the features of a good
presentation.
What are some of the pitfalls!

Make cue cards
Use clear, appropriate images
Email the work to each other & the teacher
Be ready when it’s your turn

on the Studyhistory
website
Needs improving
Satisfactory
WOW factor!
Evidence of ‘cut
& paste’ e.g. too
much text, words
which presenters
can’t pronounce or
explain
Effective use of ICT –
appropriate amount
of text, well-chosen
images
Good group work
Impressive use of ICT –
uses PowerPoint creatively
& effectively, uses cue
cards rather than reading
from board, doesn’t
overrun
Limited evidence
of effective group
work, e.g.
presentation
incomplete, one
person leads
Needs to focus more
on the main question,
‘How civilised were
the Romans?’
Excellent group work –
work is shared evenly,
everyone contributes to
presentation
Presentation answers the
question ‘How civilised
were the Romans?’
Extension task
Conduct some research into Roman Canterbury.
Paste a copy of a picture into your book and
annotate it. How similar or different was Roman
Canterbury to the towns you have studied today?
Homework
Finish the homework set earlier - A Roman WAG
is looking to buy an expensive Roman villa in
Kent. Imagine you have been asked to produce an
estate agent’s brochure on Lullingstone Villa. Use
your notes and your own research to explain why
the property would be so desirable to a
prospective Roman buyer in the fourth century
AD.
Plenary
Explain these words:
Municipia
Aqueduct
Basilica
3 benefits of living in towns
3 problems with towns compared with life in the
countryside
Why was public health so important for the
Romans?
