The expansion of the Roman
Empire
ROME
Rome is a
place with
beautiful
architecture
and statues.
It is located
on the east
side of Italy.
Next to the
Tiber river.
The picture to
the left is a
colosseum in
present day
Rome.
FIRST EXPANSION
After
Rome was
defeated it
rebuilt its
boundary
so it was
very hard
to invade.
After that
they
conquered
all of
Italy.
SECOND EXPANSION WAR1
The first
Punic war
was against
Carthage.
The
Romans
won this
difficult
fight. They
conquered
Sicily as
well as
other
islands.
Second Expansion War 2
Rome had a
second Punic
war against
Carthage.
They won this
war also. The
leader of
Carthage lead
his army
through
Spain and
then up
through The
Alps to Gaul
(France).
Rome then
got Spain as
territory.
Second Expansion War 3
Rome fought
Carthage for
a lot of land
in their
battles. They
had a third
Punic war.
This war
resulted in
the Roman
Empire
gaining more
territory.
They now had
Macedonia
and Greece.
Third Expansion (Part 1)
Caesar was in
a fight with
Pompey.
Caesar went
to conquer
lands and
defeat
Pompey.
Caesar
conquered
much of Gaul.
Pompey
conquered
eastern lands
such as Syria
and the
island of
Cyprus.
Third Expansion (Part 2)
Caesar was banned from
entering Italy with his
army. He was banned from
doing this by Pompey.
Caesar disobeyed and
went right on across the
Rubicon River with his
army. After three years of
fighting, he defeated
Pompey.
Fourth Expansion
The
fourth
expansion
got the
Roman
Empire the
lands of
Britain,
part of
Asia
Minor,
Egypt, and
Spain.
Summary
During the first expansion The Roman Empire gained all of
Italy. Rome had to rebuild its city with borders all around
it so it was hard to invade.
During the second expansion The Roman Empire gained
The Alps, Macedonia, Spain, Sicily, and part of Carthage.
They won all this land by fighting Cartage for it.
During the third expansion The Roman Empire gained
Gaul (France), part of Asia Minor, and Part of Egypt. They
gained this land because Caesar and Pompey had a fight to
see who could get the most land.
During the fourth expansion The Roman Empire gained
Britain, the rest of Spain, and Egypt. They gained this
because Octavian had to defeat jealous rivals.
