What have the Romans
ever done for us?
Calendar
• The calendar we use
today with 365 days in a
year, is based on the one
developed by Julius
Caesar.
• All the months of the
year take their named
from the Roman months.
• Some days of the week
are named after Roman
Gods.
Roads
• In Britain, several of the main roads – e.g. the
A1 follow the old lines of Roman roads.
Religion
• Christianity was
adopted as the official
religion of the Roman
Empire in AD337 and
remains the dominant
religion in most
countries, which once
formed part of the
Empire.
Buildings
• Roman styles have been copied in many places
at different times, e.g. public buildings such
as museums and town halls. The GPO in Dublin
is built in this style.
Language
• Latin has influenced
the way European
languages such as
French, Spanish,
Italian and English
have developed.
• We’ve borrowed
many words from
Latin to use in
English, e.g. versus,
et cetera, exit.
