The Facts, Please!
The whip that Jesus used two different
times to cleanse the temple was made of
small cords of rope.
The Facts, Please!
The scourge that the Roman soldiers used to
whip Jesus had three leather thongs which
were weighted with sharp pieces of lead or
bone. They could tear the flesh off both the
back and the breast of the person being
scourged.
The Facts, Please!
The Roman method of scourging was to
strip a person to the waist and tie him in a
bending position to a pillar. By Jewish law,
the number of lashes must be no more than
40. Usually 39 lashes were given to be sure
that the people doing the scourging did not
miscount and give more than 40.
