meeting

SHINE!
Next Steps
• Review externship expectations
• Go through externship folders, discuss and
review documents inside
• Discuss assignments/Reports
• Steps to complete externship and program
successfully
Remember, every place is different:
• Some practice skills different then what you are taught in
school.
• Learn their office policies and procedures.
• Don’t do anything you were not trained in school to do.
• Do not pick up habits that may put your safety at risk.
• Do not do anything that causes you to question your ethics.
• Not all doctors are talkative. Do not take their lack of
conversation personal.
JUST BECAUSE IT IS DIFFERENT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS
WRONG!
Flexibility is Key to success!
Change in health care is inevitable.
Remember….
• Ask questions, just make sure you are not
asking the same ones over and over
• Learn to take criticism. You are there to learn
and their job is to teach you.
• Don’t be a know it all. Even if you know
something, sometimes it is best to let the
person training you explain how they would
like it done there.
Are you ready?
black pen, notebook
Stethoscope
School ID
Comfortable shoes! You will be doing a lot of
walking!
Know where the lab is.
Time traffic, parking to be on time!

day of externship. 
• Have you contacted your sites?
Fiscal Clearance
• Externship is considered part of each program
and must be paid for prior to beginning
externship.
• If a student’s account is not “clear” prior to the
externship start date the student will not be
allowed to begin externship.
• Have you made sure your account is “clear”
for externship?
Attendance
• Students are required to attend the full amount of externship hours per
each program.
• In all options (full time/part time,) a student’s schedules must be flexible
to accommodate the required days and hours of the clinical rotations at
