Overview of Externship
The externship program is a valuable part of training at The SouthWest
Skill Center.
•
It allows students to apply the skills, and training they have acquired in an actual health
care setting.
• The externship must be understood to be a real class and an
assignment. Always remember this: Externship is a class EG:
(SIM120) and requires a grade (pass or fail) in order to complete the
program and receive your certificate of completion.
•
A satisfactory externship evaluation, overall rating of at least “average=75%) is
required.
I am your instructor for externship
•
•
Students must successfully complete externship in order to
complete the program and receive their certificate.
Overview of Externship Cont’d
•
•
•
Many externship sites cooperate with the SWSC as a way to
identify future employees, but the externship is not a form of job
placement and employment cannot be guaranteed.
Each sites supervisor and trainers/preceptors have agreed to
take an active role in our student’s education and training and
are required to evaluate student performance in a constructive
manner to help students improve skills, identify strengths, and
prepare for their career as a professional in Allied Health Care.
All parties involved-the school, the student and the site
personnel must work together to maintain the
relationship for future students.
Be aware, every clinic is different:
• Some practice skills different then what you are taught in school.
• Learn the office policies and procedures.
• Some clinics do not practice venipuncture, and will send patients
out to labs.
• Don’t do anything you were not trained in school to do.
• Do not pick up bad habits that may put your safety at risk.
• Do not do anything that causes you to question your ethics.
• Not all providers are talkative. Do not take their lack of
conversation personal.
• You will hear from your classmates during externship all about
these differences!
JUST BECAUSE IT IS DIFFERENT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WRONG!
Discussion
• Share ideas of what you think externship will be like.

Cross Cultural Healthcare and
Awareness
Think Cultural Health
What exactly is cultural health? Well, cultural health is a special
discipline that covers the health and accurate description of a
particular culture. Cultural health is a complex study that can be
broken down to national cultural health and ethnic cultural
health. National cultural health is basically a study of how
healthy a society is culturally nationwide, whereas ethnic
cultural health covers the health of a given ethnicity.

• You will work with patients who do not speak English, ask for an
Interpreter, be courteous until you can find someone who speaks
their language!
Standards Of Practice/Creeds
Each profession has its own “creed,” or
“standards of practice.” Students should know
these and keep them in the back of their minds
when providing patient care and working with
others.

Allied Health Programs Clinical Policies
• In addition to policies and procedures in the Maricopa
Community Colleges catalogs and student handbooks, for the
protection of students and patients, any Allied Health Program
which includes assignment to patient care facilities such as
hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, skilled nursing facilities and
other health care settings requires students to comply with the
MCCD AHC student policies.
• Please read and abide by the policies in the Shared Academic
Allied Health Program Student handbook.
• Make sure you completely understand the policies regarding
student accidents and exposure guidelines, drug screening,
and professionalism
New Training
Requirements
As of 5/1/12 all MCCCD allied health care and
Nursing students must complete regulatory training
modules online through OCO (online clinical
orientation)
https://www.myocoaz.com/
You may have additional facility specific training.
If so, you will receive an email from OCO.

Guidelines
•
•
•
•
Questions or concerns regarding training or requirements/policies at the clinical
site should be discussed with the site supervisor prior to bringing them to the
attention of the Externship Manager. This is a common request of our externship
trainers/preceptors. Give them a chance to resolve any concerns.
If a student is dismissed from the original externship location for performance or
behavior issues, the student may be required to repeat the entire externship hours
at another facility.
If a student is dismissed a second time from the second clinical site the student
will be withdrawn from the program with no certificate of completion, and may
not be allowed to apply for re-admission for a time period determined by the
program manager.
Remember: Integrity, professionalism, honesty, compassion, imitative, skills and a
good attitude will make you successful for externship and open doors for your
career!
Learn more by referring to your handouts provided during the first externship
meeting and your student handbook.
Social Media/Social Networking
•Communication is vital to the role of a healthcare professional. With the advent of new
technology, there are multiple methods of communication with faculty/staff, preceptors
and/or fellow students.
•It is unacceptable to post any inflammatory or derogatory words and/or pictures related
to your education/externship including: faculty, clinical preceptors, support staff, physical
domain or the educational environment of the SWSC or externship site on Facebook,
Twitter, MySpace or any other social media/blog/internet site.
•This will be viewed as libelous and considered a violation of the student conduct and/or
confidentiality policy. A student conduct incident report will be filed.
•It is equally unacceptable to post any pictures, comments or reference to any patients,
clinical sites and/or affiliates, employees or situations related to your clinical education.
This is irrespective of the nature of the comments. This is a violation of confidentiality
and federal law. It may be dealt with through the legal system.
Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in disciplinary action up to and
including suspension or termination from the Medical Program.
•Share past student experience on facebook
Additional Facility Training/Requirements
• All hospitals require proof of flu and H1N1 vaccinations during the spring
and fall prior to starting any rotations at any of their facilities.
• Students are responsible for the cost of these vaccines. Declinations are only
accepted with documented proof of religious or health reasons.
• Banner Health now requires a background check in addition to the
fingerprint clearance card. There is no charge to the student for this check.
• Mrs. Peigné will inform students attending at Banner facilities and have these
students fill out the background check forms to return to her prior to
externship.
• SHC now requires a urine nicotine screening, so this is included in your drug
screen at no extra cost.
• Some facilities require a pre externship interview, that may be in person or on
the phone and may require the student to come dressed in business attire.
Attendance
• Students are required to attend the full amount of externship hours per
each program.
• If a student requires attendance part time, the Externship Manager will
need to be advised prior to discuss this option with the selected facility for
approval. If approved, the student will be expected to attend consistently
as per the agreed set schedule with the facility.
• In all options (full time/part time,) a student’s schedule must be flexible
to accommodate the required days and hours available at the assigned
health care facility.
• Clinical experiences occur primarily during the day hours. Students are
expected to attend day time externships, unless the day shift is
unavailable.
• Some facilities will offer evening and weekend hours and may include 8,
10, and/or 12 hour shifts. These are usually limited and only approved by
the externship manager on a case by case basis.
• Please refer to the attendance policy in your student handbook.

Keep in Mind:
• Specific site & schedule requests may be considered, but not guaranteed.
We have to accept what the facility has available.
• Remember this is an assignment and ultimately up to me, as the
Externship Manager to place you where we can to successfully complete
the externship!
• The Agency may refuse access to its site for any reason. The site may also
choose to refuse access to any student who does not meet its employee
standards for safety, health, or ethical behavior.
• Due to competition with other Schools, some students may be required to
travel farther than others depending on externship site availability. Please
make sure you have reliable transportation.
• Students are reminded to be flexible and plan ahead to attend externship
as scheduled & ASSIGNED by the Externship Manager.
• Students will not be permitted to change sites during their rotation.
To do prior to beginning
• All students will be required to conduct a brief “meet and greet”
VIA PHONE OR IN PERSON prior to beginning externship.
• You may not get to meet with the site manager, but at least you
will find out how long it takes to get to the facility, find parking,
establish contact, “break the ice” prior to your first day of
externship. 
• If a formal interview is required prior, Mrs. Peigné will let you
know. This is usually for our MA students. Is your resume ready?
Our EMCC Career Services Dept. can help!
http://www.estrellamountain.edu/students/career-services
• Mrs. Peigné will inform students ahead of time if a formal interview
is required.

Externship
Assignment Process
• Dates of externship confirmed
• 2 meetings with the Externship Manager
• Externship Manager will consult with the
Instructor for best placement
• Site chosen, student informed via email, OCO &
requirements met, student ready for externship.
• Shine, Shine, Shine!!!!
• Get a job you love!
I Consider:
• Information from the instructor: student academic
performance, (grades/instructor assessment),
professionalism, communication skills, write ups,
attendance, etc..
• Facility team & environment: Will this student fit
in with the team? How fast paced is the office? Does
the site have specific requests (GPA, bilingual,
assertive, quick with skills, interest in a specialty
such as Cardiology, OB/Gyn, Derm, etc…)
• My gut instinct! I have almost 11 years
experience of working with these partners and
placing students where I believe they will have the
best externship experience based on all of the above.
So far I have been about 99% successful! 
2nd Meeting:
• Our second meeting is usually a week prior to externship
beginning.
• A fiscal clearance must have been obtained by this meeting.
• Students will have received their assignment information
via email by this time and OCO training must be completed.
• Students will receive their externship program folders with
required documentation included.
• These forms will be reviewed and completed at the 2nd
meeting.
• Specific details of each assignment can be discussed further
at this time and final preparations conducted.
Fiscal Clearance
• Externship is considered part of each program and
must be paid for prior to beginning externship.
• If a student’s account is not “clear” prior to the
externship start date the student will not be
allowed to begin externship.
• The Externship Manager will provide a clearance
slip that each student must take to fiscal services
to be signed off and returned to her two weeks
prior to externship beginning.
Portfolio
• Students will be encouraged to put together and complete a professional
portfolio due by the exit meeting. A three ring binder will be required.

Hot Tip: Begin your organizational habits early. Buy a small notepad that easily fits
into your pocket and begin to make lists of things that are important to rememberTAKE NOTES! Make a list of questions that need answered. There will be an
overwhelming avalanche of information that you will be responsible for-fact is that it
is almost impossible to remember every little detail. 
Interpreters: purchase a clipboard with compartment for holding everything you need.
Anxiety is normal. It is a common emotion students share and has nothing to do with
how you will perform at your externship site.
Expect your first couple of days to ones of learning and getting used to your
environment.
By the end, you will usually find externship to be a very rewarding and invaluable
experience.
Your trainers are there to help you. Ask questions and learn as much as you can.
Constructive criticism is encouraged and expected from your trainers. Please do not
take this personal.
Make the best of your externship
experience Cont’d
• Attendance and punctuality are indicators of reliability and
professionalism.
• Show initiative and a strong willingness to learn.
• Display a positive attitude no matter what.
• Do not get caught up in office politics or gossip.
• Network with other staff members to explore employment
opportunities.
• If you do well, ask for letters of reference.
• Research the application process for the practice you are attending.
• If you like the site, Leave copies of your resume with the office

you. If you leave a good impression, they will be more than happy
to do this for you! 

Upon Externship Completion
• Students are responsible in making sure they meet the required
externship hours before leaving the site.

fax, email, pic of time sheets or in person.
• Taking a picture of your completed timesheet and emailing to Mrs.
Peigné has worked very well!
• Keep journals, logs and other assignments for the exit meeting.
• Upon receipt of a satisfactory evaluation and verification that all hours
have been completed the Externship Manager will start to process
completion paperwork.
• Students must ensure their performance evaluation has been turned in
and they have completed the online evaluations in order to receive their
passing grade for externship!
• Official certificates will be mailed to completers within 1 month after
completion of externship. Please keep your address up to date in
mymaricopa.edu
3rd Meeting/ExitMANDATORY
• An exit meeting will be scheduled 1-2 weeks after completion of
externship. This date & time will be provided to you.

together to share externship experiences and complete program exit
surveys, receive employment, volunteer, and certification information &
resources.
• Your completed portfolios will be due at this time.
• We value & need your feedback to help us evaluate our programs so online
