Interferences to Nutritional Needs
Due to Regulatory Mechanism
Dysfunction:
Endocrine Disorders
Endocrine problems
• What hormones are secreted by the pituitary glands?
• What are factors that affect the amt of the hormone in the
body? (in other words, what causes a hypo vs a hyper
state?
• What do each of the secreted hormones control in the
body?
• If you have too much of the hormone, what effect does
that have on the body? (s/s)
• If you have too little of the hormone, what effect does that
have on the body? (s/s)
• Did you notice that hyper and hypo states of the hormone
give opposite s/s in most cases? When does this not hold
true?
• What labs are performed that define the hypo or
hyper state?
• How is the hypo vs hyper state treated
(medically)?
• What nursing interventions would you perform
for someone in the hypo vs hyper state? Can you
give rationales for each of the interventions?
• What medications are given to treat the hyper vs
hypo state? How do they work? Why are they
given? (Do they treat the disease or do they treat
the effects of the disease?
• What nursing diagnoses can you identify that would be
appropriate for the patient in the hyper state? In the
hypo state? Give rationales for each diagnoses.
• Answer all of these questions for each of the endocrine
glands studied: pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid.
• Make a chart comparing the hypo vs the hyper state for
each gland (from memory – no peeking allowed!!!!)
How well did you do?
• Draw a picture of what the patient would look like for
each of the endocrine problems, hypo vs hyper.
• Did you bother to look at the decision-making
challenges in your text? How did you do? Do you
understand the rationales given?
