What is CPOE?
2
Definition
The computer system that allows
direct entry of medical orders.
It reduces errors by minimizing
ambiguity and works best with clinical
decision support.
3
Why CPOE?
4
Meaningful Use
Objective
Use computerized provider order entry (CPOE) for medication, laboratory
and radiology orders directly entered by any licensed healthcare
professional who can enter orders into the medical record per state, local
and professional guidelines.
Measure
More than 60 percent of medication, 30 percent of laboratory, and 30
percent of radiology orders created by the EP during the EHR reporting
period are recorded using CPOE.
Exclusion
Any EP who writes fewer than 100 medication, radiology, or laboratory
orders during the EHR reporting period.
5
Changes in 2013
• CMS added an optional alternate measure to
the objective for CPOE.
• It is based on the total number of medication
orders created during EHR reporting period.
• This measure will be required for all providers
in Stage 2.

Attestation Requirements

Measure 1 – Medication

recorded using CPOE

60 percent
Exclusion - Any EP who writes fewer than 100 medication
orders during the reporting period

Measure 2 – Radiology
Denominator - Number of radiology orders created by the
EP during the EHR reporting period.
Numerator - The number of orders in the denominator
recorded using CPOE.
Threshold - The resulting percentage must be more than
30 percent in order for an EP to meet this measure.
Exclusion - Any EP who writes fewer than 100 radiology
orders during the EHR reporting period.
9
Measure 3 – Laboratory
Denominator - Number of laboratory orders created by
the EP during the EHR reporting period.
Numerator - The number of orders in the denominator
recorded using CPOE.
Threshold - The resulting percentage must be more than
30 percent in order for an EP to meet this measure.
Exclusion - Any EP who writes fewer than 100 laboratory
orders during the EHR reporting period
