Safer Communities through Mobility
Requirements
Replace Sacramento’s outdated CAD and RMS
systems. Upgrade 800Mhz Data Infrastructure
from the 16 year old technology. Transform hand
written police reports into electronic reports
Solution
CAD/RMS and Field Reporting with new Private
800Mhz DataRadio infrastructure. TCP/IP over
800Mhz RF is available in the car. An aerial
video downlink is also provided directly to the
police vehicle.
Results
Faster response times. Better information provided
to the officers and better resource management
for officers.

Efficiency in Pittsburgh
Requirement
• Improve services for citizens an streamline operations
to reduce expenses.
Solution
• Replaced legacy servers with HP Blade Servers
“If we do go down, the
(reduced 50 servers to 25)
power requirements of
• IT staff implemented streamlined reporting system for
the new blade servers
Law enforcement
will give us the ability
• Add Digital Imaging to fight costly graffiti problem
to keep all applications
up and running.”
Results
• Server modernization and consolidation reduces software Howard A. Stern
licensing costs and staff spent on maintenance & backup.
CIO, Pittsburgh
• New law enforcement applications save officers HOURS
on incident reporting – for vandalism reports on graffiti computer system does comparisons instantaneously!
• Each time they lose an old machine to the blade server,
the city’s costs continue to drop.

By using commercially available
computer systems, we are able to
provide the customer with
increased reliability, advanced
technologies and increased
processing power, all while
achieving the original goal of the

Pushing SQL
in Research
“
The Johns Hopkins Sloan Digital Sky Survey has
been expanding its catalog size to about 300 million
celestial objects that are stored in a Microsoft SQL
Server 2000 database. The project manages
computations for calculating the distances between
all pairs of objects within the catalog. The positive
effects of large memory were seen very clearly in the
first generation 64-bit Itanium-based server. With
HP’s 64-bit Intel Itanium-based platform configured
with 28 GB of memory we were able to do the job in
10 days, where it would have taken half a year
previously.

Clustering - An Overview
Clustering is combining multiple servers to provide reliable,
available and scalable services to clients
A cluster generally comprises of:
•Multiple Servers
•One or more interconnects
•Shared storage (often with RAID)
The total configuration delivers
availability & scalability for…..
….clients and applications

The chips are more dense
Consume less electrical power but generate more heat
Memory is ‘inexpensive’
The world is consuming more ‘bits’ in memory and storage
SMP is more obvious and ‘used’
Threading is considered normal
Multi-core technology is creeping down the line
Handheld / mobile computing generates more users on-line than before
Growth in system density becomes the norm

The Trend in Systems
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
The PC is yesterday’s mainframe
The handheld is yesterday’s PC
The server’s are yesterday’s big computer
We used to have server sprawl, now we go back to
consolidation and greater efficiency
Knowing how much computing we are getting is
becoming more important
Cheap memory makes for poorer code implementations
Density is the new game
