Warm Up!
• Can you understand something without going
through the experience?
Ex. Knowing how it feels to be dumped without
being dumped.
ACT Word- Amicable (adj) friendly,
agreeable

Wrap-Up research methods
Examine Case Study: Hell’s Angels
Evaluate the pro’s and con’s to observation
Notes on Research types
Evaluating Research types
7 Step Research process
Step 3: Form a hypothesis.
- Hypothesis: A statement that predicts the
relationship between variables.
- Write a statement, similar to a thesis.
Ex. Based on the reviews, I should buy the beats
because they have better sound quality and
better colors.
7 Step Research process
Step 4: Choose a research design.
- There are many ways to research, you pick
one like: Surveys, Interviews, Observations etc.
Ex. I will take a poll of how many of my friends
have beats vs. bose.
7 Step Research process
Step 5: Collect the data
- You going around giving surveys, or sit and
observe a place/ people’s reactions taking
notes.
Ex. Asked my 10 friends.
7 Step Research process
Step 6: Analyze the data
- look over the numbers, create graphs,
evaluate what people said etc.
Ex. 8 of my 10 friends had Beats, and all said
positive things about them.
7 Step Research process
Step 7: Present Conclusions
- Using the numbers, and analysis create
concluding statement.
- What does the data show?
Ex. Since more than half of my friends had Beats
and like them, Beats are the better pair of
headphones. I will buy those!
How would this research process
look?
Brain Break! You are the teacher!
• Grade the following short answer response
questions out of 6 pts.
Goal!
• SWBAT evaluate the effectiveness of research
methods.
• EQ: How do sociologists study society?
Hell’s Angels Study
• Hunter Thompson studied the gang Hell’s
Angels… What happened?
• What type of study is this?
Video
• http://youtu.be/gzV6TPdKPjE
Observation Study
• Read Hell’s Angel Article
• What kind of study is this?
• What are the problems with the study?
Remind me of the 7-step model?
• We will look closely at step 4: How are we
researching?
Goal!
• SWBAT evaluate the effectiveness of research
methods.
• EQ: How do sociologists study society?
Observation?
• Research observers group or people in their
natural habitat.
• 2 types of Observation
▫ Participant Observation: Researcher is directly
involved.
▫ Detached Observation: Researcher observes from
a distance, asking questions etc. They do not
become part of the group
Experiment vs. Observation??
• Experiments use the research method, AND are
in highly controlled conditions. (in the
researchers space.)
• Asch Social Experiment
The Asch Experiment Hilarious! Or Is
It?
HW: Conduct an observation.
• Take down at least a page of notes for 10-15
minutes. Just observe what is going on around
you in a social setting. (Lunch Room, Coffee
Shop, Mall, Clothing Store etc.)
Surveys!?
A survey is a research method in which subjects
respond to a series of statements or questions in a
questionnaire or an interview..
-Surveys are directed at populations, the people
who are the focus of research.
Ex: Researchers who solicited responses to an online
survey of almost 100,000 people from around the
world, including 23,000 in the USA, sought to
understand what was “normal” They found:
-48% of men and 28% of women report to having
fallen in love at first sight.
-43% of men and 33% of women say they are keeping
a major secret from their partner.
Interviews!?
• Interviews can be a type of survey. The researchers
guide the questions. 2 types of interviews:
1. Unstructured: loose set of questions, or only one
question to allow interview to go in many directions
1. Try it out  each member will have 3 min. to do a mini
interview attempting to understand a students family
background.
2. Semi-structured interviews: Topics/ Questions are
developed to initiate discussion.
1. Try it out  each member will have 3 min. to do a mini
interview attempting to understand a students family
background. First: Write 3 questions.
Which type did you prefer?
How do we measure these things?
Quantitative vs. Qualitative
• Quantitative…Quant… Quantity= numbers
based! Any survey that analyzes numbers, any
time an interview counts or calculates the # of
times something was mentioned etc.
• Qualitative: This data is in the form of
observations and descriptions.
Quick Write: What research method is
the most effective?
• Argue which of the research types is the best.
