What purpose does fat serve in a healthy diet?
What are the three types of fat?
Which type of fat should you LIMIT in your diet?
Which type of fat should you AVOID in your diet?
Proteins/The nutrients

Essential nutrients used to repair body cells and
tissues. Builds Skeletal Muscle.


Complete proteins- Found in milk, eggs, and fish. (animal
products) These proteins contain all 9 essential amino
acids.
Incomplete proteins- Found in Grains, legumes, and
nuts/seeds. (plant products). These proteins DO NOT
contain the essential amino acids. People who eat these
proteins need to mix proteins so they get the essential
amino acids necessary repair and building.
Fats/The nutrients


Secondary source of energy, stores vitamins, and insulates
the body.
Saturated fat- Fats found in meats and dairy, these
fats will raise bad Cholesterol (LDL)


Unsaturated fat- Liquid fats that come from plants.
Trans Fats_ Man made fats that preserve food for longer
“shelf life”. Body has tremendous trouble breaking down
this type of fat. Made from a process where hydrogen is
added to liquid to make a solid. Another name for trans
fats is “partially hydrogenated oils."


What are the six nutrients?
Describe vitamins, minerals, & water (do your best I
realize you don’t have notes yet.)

Take out your food label assignment.

Vitamins

Organic materials that are essential to maintaining
life functions.
Water soluble-



Vitamin B (Metabolism of food to energy)
C (Helps HDL levels, antioxidants, immunity, and joints),
dissolve in water, must be replaced daily.
Fat soluble-




A (skin, mucous membrane linings)
D(Sunshine vitamin; stores calcium), E(Immunity/antioxidants),
K(Clots blood) dissolve in fat, will be stored until needed.
Minerals

Substances that work to keep your body working
properly. Minerals will work with vitamins.
 Calcium:
Strengthen bone
 Iron: Transport and stores oxygen
 Potassium/Sodium: Fluid balance
Water


The most essential nutrient. Water breaks down
food, carries nutrients, removes waste, and
regulates body temperature. You should drink 64
oz. of water daily or drink half your body weight in
ounces.
Weight= 140 LBS, Water to drink 70 oz.
Assignments


Current event 10/26/12
Nutrient project- 10/26/12.
Other substances in your diet
Fiber- the part of grains, fruits,
and vegetables that the body
can not breakdown. Fiber helps
digestion, elimination of wastes,
and fighting cancer.

Antioxidants
Substances or nutrients that remove free
radicals from your body. Free radicals are
substances that can cause aging, cancer, illness,
among other issues.
 Antioxidants (vitamins and other substances)are
found in fruits, vegetables, beans (Soy),
tea/coffee, flaxseed, among others.

Sodium




Is an essential mineral for human life, it works with
potassium to transmit nerve pulses (allowing all the
body’s functions to occur)
Sodium is used in preserved (frozen, canned) foods.
Too much sodium (Salt) can cause water retention
(excess weight), raise heart rate.
RDA 2400 mg/day or one teaspoon/day
Sugar



A simple carbohydrate that is found in or added to
foods for the sweet flavor.
Sugars can be found in table sugar/plant(sucrose),
Milk (lactose) Fruits (fructose) and added into
desserts (high fructose corn syrup)
Too much sugar may lead to tooth decay, excess fat
storage, and type II diabetes.
