Developments in computer technology and related
software have provided the engineer with tools of
increasing power and sophistication which have significant
implications for the use and role of mathematics in
engineering practice.

If engineers are to take full advantage of sophisticated
computational tools then it is essential that they become
effective at mathematical modelling and discriminating,
intelligent and wary users of packaged software and
other aids to computational modelling.

required, for without this there can be no real

Vector and matrix technique provide the framework for
much of the developments in modern engineering.

Chapters 7 and 8 are devoted to the calculus of
functions of one variable and, recognizing again the
mixed background knowledge in mathematics of the
students, the basic ideas and techniques of
differentiation and integration are reviewed in Chapter 7.
